Now into their 25th year, Bon Jovi have kept the faith, or something close to it. More to the point, so have their fans. The New Jersey band's latest album, Lost Highway, has sold well in excess of three million copies and topped the charts around the world, while the accompanying tour, which began a year ago, has been a global blockbuster of even greater magnitude. Arriving in Southampton on the opening night of the UK stretch, the band were in typically ebullient form.
“Is anybody out there looking for a party?” sang Jon Bon Jovi, blithely ignoring the dark rain clouds glowering over the 35,000-strong crowd. Heads all shaking furiously, the band revved into the dance-rock riff of We Got It Going On. “We'll be bangin' and sangin' just like the Rolling Stones,” the singer promised.
And as good as his word, halfway through Sleep When I'm Dead, the band conjured up a verse of the Stones song Start Me Up, during which Jon Bon Jovi treated the crowd to an awkward, wedding-party impression of Mick Jagger's dance moves.
