Is Asbury ready for Bamboozle? |
|
Asbury Park Press article
The city of Asbury Park and concert promoter Live Nation have given their assurances that they will be able to handle the crowds at this weekend’s Bamboozle Festival. We’re keeping our fingers crossed that they are right. But we’re skeptical.
It begins with the crowd estimates. Live Nation’s latest projections are 20,000 Friday night, 40,000 Saturday and 30,000 Sunday. Presumably, those numbers are based on advance ticket sales. Maybe they’re in the ballpark. But the numbers for Saturday, when the Foo Fighters will top the bill, and on Sunday, when Bon Jovi will be doing a full set on the main stage, sound low. Super low.
The Foo Fighters are a stadium band. In 2008, they sold out two shows at Wembley Stadium in London, which holds more than 80,000 people. They may be more popular today than ever.
Last year, Bon Jovi was the third-largest-grossing touring act in the world. In 2010, it was the top grossing band in the U.S.
Bon Jovi live for a rare appearance in its own backyard? On the beach? On what is expected to be a beautiful Sunday evening on the cusp of summer? And only 30,000 are expected to show up for the whole day?
