"One Wild Night: Live 1985-2001" Review 3 June 2001
Totally Missed Opportunity

This is NOT the Bon Jovi live album I was praying for!

A review by thepopa / thepopa@neo.rr.com

I have converted many non-believers to the ranks of Bon Jovi fans by simply bringing them along to a concert with me. There is no live band better than Bon Jovi. The energy they put forth, as well as the tight musicianship they employ are the tops in the world. But this collection of random live tracks doesn't capture any of that.

As someone with a great deal of Bon Jovi live material, I have to question the choices -- and I especially have to question why the live tracks were so blatantly doctored in the studio when I have plenty of tracks that would be superior without doctoring.

Every person has their favorite songs and there's always going to be disappointment when something like that is released BUT I cannot make sense of a Bon Jovi live record that doesn't feature "Blood On Blood," "I'll Be There For You," or "Wild in the Streets." These songs are the cornerstones of a great Bon Jovi concert and are far more interesting musically live than they were in the studio. And everyone who has seen the band knows that "Bad Medicine" always seques into "Shout!"

No, this album shouldn't be a gift to the hardcore fans only. But, in the end, live albums are purchased by hardcore fans (Frampton and KISS notwithstanding) and should be used to showcase what makes an act more special live than in the studio. A Bon Jovi live album should have electrified this reviewer, I should be passing this disk out to friends who still refuse to believe. But I'm not. Not even close. I have plenty of other live recordings to keep me happy.

Not that the album is without merit. "Someday I'll Be Satruday Night" sounds marvelous and "Rockin' In the Free World" is better than the original. But that's about it. Why listen to this when I have the Yokohama shows? Those were the Bon Jovi live album that should be out there. Not this collection of throw away versions of Bon Jovi's second tier songs.
