"One Wild Night: Live 1985-2001" Review 4 June 2001
One Boring Night: June 1-June 4

Does my title make sense?

A review by John_Jovi / johnnault1@excite.com

Definitely not, but the people in the Bon Jovi camp would not only think it was a suitable title, they'd put it out as a CD if they thought they could sell a couple dozen copies.

Sadly, this seems to be the motivation behind ONE WILD NIGHT LIVE. It's hard to understand how the band, management, the record company, and everyone else involved in this project could be so short-sighted or are just out to make a few bucks. That's okay, I purchased my copy second hand just a week and a half after its release.

First off, that title is stupid. How about...I dunno...WILD NIGHTS LIVE...or WILD, WILD NIGHTS. I mean there's a current single to promote and all, but I think we still would've gotten the point if it wasn't called ONE WILD NIGHT.

But, again sadly, Bon Jovi's short-sightedness is incredibly staggering at times, which leads to the track listing of this album.

Should the band consider asking the fans what they want to hear on a live record? Yes. Very little of ONE WILD NIGHT is new and fresh. With an Internet poll I'm sure you'd have a much better and radically different album. I mean how many different versions of PRAYER, BAD NAME, WANTED, BAD MEDICINE, KEEP THE FAITH do we need in this life?

What about I'D DIE FOR YOU, WILD IN THE STREETS, IN THESE ARMS, WILD IS THE WIND, STICK TO YOUR GUNS, BORN TO BE MY BABY, to name just a few. If these songs were on the live album it would make the rest of the usual crap a little more bearable. The inclusion of SOMETHING TO BELIEVE IN and SOMETHING FOR THE PAIN make this live album the only worthwhile tracks to listen to, which gives it it's rating of three.

It's unfortunate that the live record does in fact almost mirror the band's live set list. It's a shock that LAY YOUR HANDS ON ME and I'LL SLEEP WHEN I'M DEAD aren't on ONE WILD NIGHT and/or the same tired covers they're playing on the current tour, as they've been playing these same songs night after night after night. I honestly don't remember TWIST AND SHOUT being one of my fave Bon Jovi songs.

I feel it's important to write this because this is a band that can play and that I honestly think are the Rolling Stones of our generation, but they need to know it's getting a little old now.

As forward as I look to seeing them in July, I know it's a far stretch that the show will be a little more diverse than they've recently been.

But, how can I feel that bad? Thankfully, my ONE WILD NIGHT came just as recycled as these songs.

Rating: 3/10
