"One Wild Night: Live 1985-2001" Review 8 June 2001
OLDER,WILDER:this album ROCKS!

OLDER, WILDER:Jon,keep on rockin' in the free world!

A review by steve bongiovino / onewildnight2001@ireland.com

seven studio albums, over 2000 concerts, one greatest hits package; a document of one of the greatest bands on the planet;but, what is the missing link?ah, for Bon Jovi it was a live album. it seems to me that Bon Jovi have given some thought to the compilation of this album. somewhat strangely though, most performances are taken from the latest tour and there's nothing from their mammoth Slippery and New Jersey Tours. JBJ says that he was surprised that O'Brien didn't pick anything from the New Jersey Tour("there was some good stuff back from those days") but the absence of material from the Slippery tour makes sense cos Jon was dosed up with cortisone and his voice was shot back, wasn't much of a voice. things start really well with energised versions of IT'S MY LIFE, LIVIN...and ...BAD NAME.

I do not understand why people say that they don't like... FAITH just because it's too similar to the studio version. i think it's a good thing, instead.it means that the band can make it live!

many people love the live version of ...SATURDAY NIGHT.it's pretty good but the intro is TOO slow.good, but they should have opted for something else (live from Wembley 95,I suppose). the performances of the two cover songs have been criticised by most magazines. I think that ROCKIN' IN THE FREE WORLD is just supreme;I don't dislike the other one, I DON'T LIKE MONDAYS,but I generally don't like any duet. the live versions of songs like IN AND OUTTA LOVE and SOMETHING TO BELIEVE IN have been a surprise, and to be honest with u, "live" are much better than the tracks we are used to know from the studio albums. the performance of SOMETHING FOR THE PAIN is pretty much the same of the studio version, and despite people may be hostile to this kind of live performances, I do love them.

WANTED DEAD OR ALIVE "was recorded in a 500 seater venue" (to quote JBJ) and I do love the intro. if u close your eyes and try to imagine a little bit: you can see the crowd of fans with those cigarette lighters! Amazing. the performance of JUST OLDER is pretty good but I think it could have been a bit better.

a magazine said the performance of RUNAWAY starts to show its age. well,it's aged 16! but it's fucking great: I think they had to pick a performance from their early days and they picked the right one.

the live version of one of my favourite (BAD MEDICINE) is good.it's slighty different from the studio version but still good.

the re-mix of ONE WILD NIGHT is an improved version of the Crush version,no doubt about it.

the live album is good,it probably goes beyond my expectations even if my live favourites like LAY YOUR HANDS ON ME (it appears on the b-side of the O.W.N. single),I'LL SLEEP WHEN I'M DEAD and BLOOD ON BLOOD are missing.

Obie O'Brien did a good job, not a supreme one cos he cut the crowd noise off almost in every track but at least the performances are REAL, the live tracks are live, they aren't re-mixed in the studio.

On Sunday I'll go to the Bon Jovi Concert (please note the capital 'C') in RDS,Dublin. I'm so excited!

see ya mates,
KEEP THE FAITH
