"One Wild Night: Live 1985-2001" Review 8 June 2001
Yes it could have been better, but I'm still enjoying this one

A review by Retesh / retesh_s@hotmail.com

I have read a lot of reviews on this CD and it appeared that it has been a disappointment to a lot of fans. Now I do like this CD a lot - not my favorite and it is not "bad" at all. Some complaints I've heard was the mis-representation - they left off performances between 1986 and 2001. I agree that this is a significant oversight. A live CD should include performances over a wide range of songs. The other complaint was selection of songs. I agree to some degree on this as well. There are some great live songs they left off such as "Lay Your Hands On Me", "Blood On Blood", "I Believe" or "In These Arms".

"It's My Life" - Surprisingly I like the live version better but it still needed more juice (more energy). (7/10)

"Living On A Prayer" - Great song in any shape or form - live version is good. (8/10)

"You Give Love A Bad Name" - This is a toned-down version that includes fans singing and it works. (8/10)

"Keep The Faith" - I am very mixed - live version is quite weak and lacking in energy. They should have included the "Sympathy For The Devil" on this one. (5/10)

"Someday I'll Be Saturday Night" - I had been losing favor with the original, but this live song blew me away. I love the intro. (9/10)

"Rockin' In A Free World" - I love this song. I'm not familiar with the Neil Young version but Bon Jovi did a great job. I was hoping to hear some more fan interaction on this since it is a powerful song and performed in South Africa. This might be out of place on this album, but since it is very good, I will let it slide. (8/10)

"Something To Believe In" - I always knew this would be a good live song, but wow. The live version is very effective and is my favorite. (10/10)

"Wanted Dead Or Alive" - Solid live song. There are a few songs including this one that should have been pulled off the Slippery Tour in the late 80s. There must have been more raw emotion or a harder version of this song. (7/10)

"Runaway" - Great version. At least they pulled this from 1986. (8/10)

"In And Out Of Love" - Is this really one of their biggest hits? The song is not bad, but I do not think it is good enough to be placed on this album. (6/10)

"I Don't Like Mondays" - I truly enjoyed this song. I had never heard it before. I was pleased that this song was included considering this song was not released to the States in the '70s. Also to hear the crowd roar their approval of Bob Geldof and this song was very neat. (9/10)

"Just Older" - Good live version but not much different from album version. Necessary? (7/10)

"Something For The Pain" - Why? Why? Why was this song on here? This song and "Something To Believe In" are two of the non Bon Jovi hits to make it on this album, but the live version of "Something To Believe In" justified the choice. I know people like this song, but the live version is not any more special. Bad choice. (4/10)

"Bad Medicine" - Another song they could have taken from a different tour instead of last year. (6/10)

"One Wild Night" - I liked this version better than album version and this was obligatory since they had named the album with the bland title of "One Wild Night". (6/10)

Avg. Rating: approx. 7/10

The album would have done better with a more varied representation of songs, more crowd interaction with Bon Jovi, and though I disagreed at first, this should have been a double live CD. One of their points Bon Jovi fans make while defending the band is how good Bon Jovi is live. This album fell short of justifying it. I hate to say that though.
