"One Wild Night: Live 1985-2001" Review 9 June 2001

Disappointing somehow...

A review by Johannes

Well, so we waited all the time for a live album, but what is that??? Even the die-hard BJ fans have to confess that this one just was made to earn money. I think BJ fans don't deserve that. Why didn't they record a whole show and release it as a double album??? Well, here are ratings to each song:

IT'S MY LIFE: This one was their comeback last year, so it had to be on this record. But why is it the opener of the album. They never opened with this song. But it sounds great live. So 8/10

LIVIN' ON A PRAYER: Great song, but this version isn't as powerful as for example the one from the Wembley show in 1995. They should have put Prayer from the the Live From London video on this album. But still 8,5/10

BAD NAME: Of course great, but used to be even better. Older version had been better. Anyway, 9/10

FAITH: Again, the 1995 version is better. Or the one from the Faith-Tour. But it's still a great live song. 9/10

SATURDAY NIGHT: This version is really cool. 10/10

ROCKIN' IN THE FREE WORLD: I really like how BJ play this great song. I hoped they wouldn't put covers on this album, but well, this is ok. 8,5/10

SOMETHING TO BELIEVE IN: I always wanted to hear this one live. It's a great song. To younger fans it maybe won't present BJ's former style, but I really love this song. 10/10

WANTED DEAD OR ALIVE: Hell, they used to make it over 9 minutes long at former tours with Richie playing a huge solo before the "real" song starts. This one is a little disappointing. but the song is still good. 8/10

RUNAWAY: I really like the 2000 version, but, of course, they had to put the original version on this record. Cool song. 9/10

IN & OUT OF LOVE: Just why? It's ok, but I guess that the Fahrenheit album wasn't that successful to put a song from it on this live album. 6,5/10

I DON'T LIKE MONDAYS: What's the deal with this song. I mean, it's a good song, but BJ just played it once in 1995, so it won't remind anybody of a BJ concert. Doesn't fit the cd. 5/10

SOMETHING FOR THE PAIN: Ok, but why not These Days, Hey God or This Ain't A Love Song? They could have taken a better song from the These Days album. Moreover, I know better live versions of this song. 7,5/10

BAD MEDICINE: Hell, where is Shout???? And why is this only about 4 and a half minutes long when the album version is nearly 6 minutes long??? It's obvious that they cut it at the beginning of Shout...6/10 for this version.

ONE WILD NIGHT 2001: I liked the original one better. They should have put a live version of this song from the last tour in the album...this version's no rock, it's pop. They don't wanna lose the fans they got with It's My Life...6/10

I really miss Lay Your Hands On Me, Blood On Blood, Born To Be My Baby, These Days and other great songs on this album. And why didn't they put a single ballad onto the cd??? It's pretty sad. If they ever will release another live album, guys, please record a whole show and release it as a double album. Plus, there is no concert atmosphere because speeches are missing and except Prayer and Bad Name the songs become lower at the end. Well, I hope this summer the guys will prove that they can do better. See ya on the road...
