"New Jersey" Review 12 July 2001

Better than SWW

A review by Johannes

Hi there,
I just read the latest review and the complaint that Ride Cowboy Ride wasn't written by any of the guys. Well, I just wanted to correct that because Captain Kidd and The King Of Swing are Jon and Richie's nicknames. Anyway, I already started reviewing this album, so I'll rate each song now:

LAY YOUR HANDS ON ME:
Great opener for the album, huge intro. Written in the studio by accident, now it's one of the greates songs live.
10/10

BAD MEDICINE:
Cool lyrics and pure rock, but not as good as Lay Your Hands On Me.
9/10

BORN TO BE MY BABY:
Wow, this is awesome. One of the best rock ballads ever.
10/10

LIVING IN SIN:
Wonderful melody, lyrics that say a lot. Unfortunately hardly played live on the last tours.
10/10

BLOOD ON BLOOD:
Finally a song that isn't about love but about friendship. You won't find many of songs like this, writting about friendship is much more difficult than writting about love. Great rock song. 10/10

HOMEBOUND TRAIN:
Well, this is a song I usually skip when I listen to my fave songs, but it's till good hard rock.
8/10

WILD IS THE WIND:
Great intro by Richie, nice bass line at the beginning. Great drums, Jon's incredible voice and the powerful guitar during the whole song make this one of the best BJ songs ever.
10+/10

RIDE COWBOY RIDE:
Don't know why, but Blood Money reminds me on this sometimes. Anyway, as I already said, written by Jon and Riche but looking at the lyrics you only find their nicknames. Cool song, could have been more if they really had worked on it. But I have some live versions of this and they are better than the album version. Anyway:
9/10

STICK TO YOUR GUNS:
A cowboy song. Strong melody, nice acoustic guitar. Why don't they play it live???
10/10

I'LL BE THERE FOR YOU:
The best ballad on this album. Wonderful lyrics and a melody that really gets straight into your heart.
10/10

99 IN THE SHADE:
Rock & Roll. Good, but not one of my faves.
9/10

LOVE FOR SALE:
This was recorded in some bar. It's no rock, it's blues somehow. I like it, it's different and doesn't fit this album or any BJ album (except TD) but I like it. Nice conversation between Jon and Riche at the end. And Tico's final words: Love....for sale.
9/10

So this is my NJ review. If I had to choose my favorite BJ cd I'd say These Days, but this comes really close to it, even better than Keep The Faith, my 3rd fave BJ cd.

Rating: 10/10
