"These Days" Review 1 January 1996

A review by Chris Quigley

Here are my views:
I think this album is tied for #1 with Slippery, Cross Road, Young Guns, and Keep The Faith.

HEY GOD
This song really fits in there with the likes of Bad Medicine. It is a great song but you have to be in a hard rock type of mood to listen to it. I was surprised at how angry Jon sounded in this song. He`s usually such a happy guy. :)

SOMETHING FOR THE PAIN
I love this song! I always found it very good but after I saw the video and got the full effect of the song, it has become one of my favorite Bon Jovi tracks of all time. The cross over lyrics are really cool.

THIS AIN'T A LOVESONG:
The reason I bought the CD. This is one awesome song. It fits right in with other Jovi love songs like Always, Bed of Roses, and Never Say Goodbye. Once again Jon displays his incredible voice range.

THESE DAYS
Sometimes I love it and sometimes I just like it. The song and lyrics are very good but it doesn`t have the same appeal as This Ain`t A Love Song or Hey God.
Rating:7/10

LIE TO ME
This is a very powerful song. The change of tempo where he says "Life`s a bitch..." fits in great. I especially like the part where Richie is singing in the background while Jon is singing the main part.
Rating:8.5/10

DAMNED
This is a catchy song that, if realeased, would definatly be a hit. The lyrics aren`t as good as other tracks but the guitars and the power of Jon`s voice make up for it.

MY GUITAR LIES BLEEDING IN MY ARMS
I knew I would like this song as soon as I saw the title. It just looked like a good song. I find this song best at a high volume. You really feel it when Jon starts singing louder and with more emotion at the end.
Rating:8/10

IT'S HARD LETTING YOU GO
A very emotional song. I found it a little too emotional at first but it grew on me. The lyrics are exceptional and it is true Jovi classic.
Rating:7.5/10

HEARTS BREAKING EVEN
This song is in a word, awesome! Although the beginning sounds almost identical to Aerosmith, the song picks up and you can hear the Bon Jovi trade mark through it. If this is realeased, I predict a #1 hit (maybe the second one of the album if Something For The Pain does what I expect it to)
Rating:8/10

SOMETHING TO BELIEVE IN
This is my least favortie song on the album, but don`t get me wrong, I still like the song. It is a little too alternative for me and for Bon Jovi. Bon Jovi is far superior to any alternative band today, but they tried to fit right inwith the alternative scene with this one.
Rating:6/10

IF THAT'S WHAT IT TAKES
This song reminds me of "I Want You" from KEEP THE FAITH. It has the traditional Bon Jovi catchiness with a good beat. It is the kind of song where you have to listen to it a few times before you can appreciate it fully.
Rating:6.5/10

DIAMOND RING
I loved this song the very first time I heard it. The guitar picking by Sambora is excellent and Jon sounds more "down to earth" in this one. It sounds similar to "Blood Money" from Young Guns 2 Soundtrack(which I love). Maybe the easiest Bon Jovi song to sing along to.
