19 July 2001 - Montreal, Quebec, Canada Concert Review 21 July 2001
A straight ahead no nonsense rock show

A review by Steve / shalabs@cyberus.ca

Whenever I go to a concert in Montreal, I always expect the crowd to go crazy, and for it to be a magical evening.

Thursday night at the Molson Centre fulfilled both of those wishes, although it will never compare to the November concert in Montreal.

I was also at the Toronto concert two days earlier, and I would have to give a slight nod to the Toronto concert. For some reason, the fans just weren't as wild as much as in November. It took a lot longer for the crowd to get warmed up and when they did, they weren't as crazy. Nothing against Bon Jovi though because they put on a top rate performance as usual, although Jon seemed a little less energetic at times compared to Toronto's amazing show.

They opened up with One Wild Night, and then proceeded to throw in a few old surprises. Raise Your hands, Wild in the Streets and they really surprised us with a welcome addition to their setlist. Wild Is The Wind. I really dug that tune and it sounded just incredible live. (Now I know why my friend Maries loves that song so much :)

I was really hoping that Richie would come and play Stranger In This Town, and when he did, I just took in the moment. That guy is incredible. He must be from another planet or something to play and sing like that. He definitely has as good a voice or better than Jon's. I'm definitely a bigger Richie fan now and am listening to both of his albums the past couple of days.

It's My Life once again got the crowd on their feet and partying. What a great live song that is. That rates up there with Livin On a Prayer, Someday I'll Be Sat. Night, and I ll Be There For You in terms of great live songs.

When Richie got up there to play the solo in Next 100 years, I think my jaw dropped for the entire solo. The speed of his hands, the electricity of the sound pumping out from his guitar..wow..

Another great moment was during Keep The Faith or Shout when Jon hit an incredibly high note...you saw a close up of his eyes on the big screen...his eyes said it all. They were fixed, staring out wide open, like a madman possessed. Possessed by the religion of Rock n Roll.

The crowd only started to get really crazy around the end of the set - towards Bad Medicine. They were loud for the encores and all, but unfortunately Bon Jovi decided against playing ballads. I dont understand why they dont play Always or Bed of Roses or even I'll Be There For You in Montreal. Those two songs made such a big impact in the province of Quebec that you would think they would play it every time! One of those songs would get a HUGE crowd reaction for sure.

They played I got The girl, the amazing Saturdy Night, Wanted and then came back for the double combo of Tequila and Twist and Shout which always gets a crowd going. I love how Jon lets the crowd sing the entire first verse of Wanted. The crowd really loved it.

The fans were ready for more, and I'm sure they could have come back for even one more song as the crowd was still quite loud. Oh well.

This was a top notch show by any standards, but the crowd in Montreal could not top itself from last November. The crowd was crazy enough though, but it could have been an even wilder night if everyone got more into it. Oh and one more thing, Livin On A Prayer should always be the last song played at a Bon Jovi show :)
