9 March 2003 - Washington, D.C, USA Concert Review 12 March 2003
DC= DOESN'T CHEER

A review by the_fletchman_needmonies / gmtsu00@aol.com

The difference in how BJ performs does depend on the crowd. I have been to three concerts and the DC concert was the shortest by a good 20 minutes. By the looks of the setlists in other cities, they have a standard setlist and then adds to it based on the "energy" of the crowd. What they played was the standard, nothing more nothing less (even though they still performed their balls off). And you can't say it was Jon's cold because he went until 20 after 11 in Philly two days before.

When the man puts his mike to the audience, you would expect the audience to sing, but not in DC. The sound of the nosepicking was much louder than the singing. People were leaving before the friggin encore! And the cheering for an encore was pathetic, like the crowd thought an encore was owed to them. Oh, and did I mention that when the Right Side of Wrong, Hook me up, The Distance,and Sleep when I'm dead was playing, that every single person surrounding me was sitting down? That's almost as bad as no one knowing Dead or Alive until half way through the guitar intro...

I guess if DC were the only city I had been to, then I would think differently because my other frame of reference was from the Crush Tour in which they played in Hershey...and those bumpkins were ten times worse. However, it is hard when you have been to both NJ and Philly, with Philly kicking ass two nights before.

Regardless, I would still go back. BJ was great and they had me at least singing and standing up the whole time.

As for the T-shirt... Hey, part of this great land is freedom of speech. HOWEVER, I too believe that the political crap needs to be left at the door. Part of the greatness of BJ is that their songs make you forget the day to day bullshit. Wearing that t-shirt brought the bullshit back in. It is very contradictory to what the band's about. Especially during a time where all of these "stars" are shooting off their uninformed and ignorant mouths, I couldn't believe he wore it. He probably didn't realize the implications, probably didn't want to make a statement (and I think Gore was in the audience too), but it would have been better if he just kept the shirt in his suitcase.

And Richie was great in I'll be there for you. I am glad that the man is finally getting some kudos because he has a beautiful voice. And besides, Jon has started to do more of that to preserve his own voice. I wish David would sing a song or two, he is very talented as well :)

Respectfully submitted,

The Fletchman
