30 May 2003 - Gelsenkirchen, Germany Concert Review 1 June 2003
Great concert ... but Jon was disappointing ...

A review by Lala / lars.lamade@t-online.de

First of all: the venue is just unbelieveable !!! It was my first indoor concert with around 50.000 people ! And all of them seemd to had a great time ... party even in the highest seats in the far corners ... just unbelieveable and a fantastic atmosphere !!!
The stage (screens, lights, lasers) is the best since years. The selection of songs is nearly perfect. But in my opinion the order should be changed ! From their 10 biggest hits, they play 9 in the beginning and only one in the second half. In my opinion this should be just reverse, because I think the highlights should be at the end of the concerts, or at least it should be changed to 50-50 ... then it would be even better.
Unfortunately they had the lasers also only in the first half, where it was not completely dark. I would have enjoyed it to see them also in the second half when it was fully dark ...
All the things mentioned are only minor improvements to make a perfect show, so it has been 95 out of 100 points ... :-))
But one thing was really disappointing: the performance of Jon ! I've been to Bon Jovi gigs since 1986 now, but this was the first time that it seemed to me that Jon is doing this concert because he HAS to do it and not because of he wants to do it ! ... Usually he always tries to get in contact with the audience, eg. between two songs he asks them how they feel, tells a little stoty to the next song or something like that. This time: nothing !! The first time he said "hello" to the audience was after 13 songs ... it seemd that they are just doing their job, as fast as possible .. song after song after song ... no words for the audience at all ... :-((
Don't get me wrong: I hate it when singers talk too much between the songs, because the first priority are the songs, but knowing Jon for more than 15 years now, I know that he has been much better in the past on that ... Usually he played with the audience, knowing that his smile makes is irresistible ... especially to the women and girls in the audience ...
Hope that this was only on that evening but in other reviews of this tour some had the same comments ... :-(((
But all in all: one of the best rock concerts I've ever seen !!!
