28 June 2003 - London, UK Concert Review 4 July 2003
Shoulda stayed at home?

A review by JT / corturbra@hotmail.com

Well it has to be said, the boys did their best. But who the f**k organized this shambles called a concert?

I wonder what muppet on a large salary came up with the idea of the Gold Circle? I know let's have a gold circle that rests on a slight uphill on the park and have the 'steerage' fans behind a barrier with a crap view sloping away from the stage, and then charge them £35 plus booking, plus handling for the privilege.

What a poor setup, we ended up about 30 ft behind the barriers segregating us from the concert. No view of anything, thats ok there's a screen someone says, we'll be able to see from that. View was that bad that we didn't realize Bon Jovi had come on stage until they started playing, we were expecting a 2nd support act (what was the name of the support act by the way?) :-)

When the screen didn't work at the start and as we couldn't see anything and the sound was poor we moved back to the second set of screens which were working, but unfortunately the speakers weren't! The middle set of speakers were so weak that the mild breeze which occurred randomly drifted the sound off.

We eventually ended up near the Victoria station sign which gave a limited view of the main stage screen (which some genius thought would be good halfway above the stage as obviously the people at the back don't need to see), and some form of sound. I felt to be honest as though I was someone trying to watch a concert for free outside the actual venue. Wondered if the view/sound from the road would have been any better?

The organizers and road crew need sacking for the setup, Bon Jovi did an excellent job of keeping the crowd going, despite the fact that most people couldn't see or hear. Wouldn't mind so much, but its the second time I've been disappointed seeing them. 1st time was at Wembley, next time I saw them was at MK and they rocked - best gig I've been to. Hyde Park sucks as a venue for concerts.

This is one disappointed fan who won't be parting with hard-earned cash next time they tour. Oh and the wife won't be going again either, you'd expect tears of joy seeing your idols, not tears of disappointment.
