17 July 2003 - Toronto, ONT, Canada Concert Review 18 July 2003
Somewhat Disappointed

A review by Teddy B. / ted.doering@ca.mbgoldfarb.com

Let me start-off by saying that I am a pretty massive Bon Jovi fan and last night's show at the Amphitheatre was my ninth Jovi concert (my first show was Slippery When Wet tour at the Exhibition when I was 8!). After the dust settled, I have to say that I was a little disappointed.

Jon didn't seem to be into the concert in terms of crowd banter (which was uncharacteristically non-existent), which I feel is one of the band's stronger qualities when playing live. Although the marriage proposal during Bed of Roses was pretty cool.

Don't get me wrong, the music was great, they are an amazingly tight live band and always nail every song they perform. It seemed like it was a very long show too - does anyone know what time they took the stage? And they certainly pulled out some gems like I'd Die For You and In These Arms. But with that being said, I feel the set list is in need of some revamping. Sure, most of the crowd comes for the 'hits', but for die-hards, there are some key songs that I feel are missing. I wish they would stop ignoring These Days, I think it's one of their best albums. When they came to the Amphitheatre to support that album in 1995, it was one of the best shows I have ever seen.

Also, I was hoping for a couple of acoustic tracks given the Minneapolis show (I realize that an outdoor venue maybe isn't the best place for acoustic numbers) - maybe Never Say Goodbye or All About Lovin' You. Maybe my expectations are too high :).

The acoustic tour is a great move for the band (in terms of switching things up) and will probably satisfy those who want to hear the songs that they rarely play.

Just my two cents - they are still one of the best live acts in the business. I can't wait for the acoustic album and tour!
