The only thing that rubs me is - why is Richie sending a message (in recent interviews) that he would return and "they have to do it", if in reality he doesn't want to.
Seems like Jon indeed keeps the doors open. Maybe there's a condition that he needs to get rid of Shanks. Richie should say it out loud.

The timeline is muddy. But Richie was saying last year he wanted back in, or at least making it clear that was the case. Went as far as to suggest ongoing talks, claims that Jon would be stupid not to, etc. It seems the second interview with him in the documentary happened after that or around the same time.
Something went wrong in-between those interviews. Perhaps the door is not as open as Jon says, Richie found that out and is now, "great, I am out". Maybe Jon was trying to force things on Richie he does not want. For example, he has no hand in the writing process anymore. Maybe Richie tried to say its him or Shanks and Jon chose Shanks. Perhaps Richie overplayed his own hand with unworkable demands.
Jon says he and Richie watched the three episodes together. So, they have/had more of a relationship than both admit. There were rumors Richie left that viewing unhappy with his portrayal. I do not believe that idea because the most interesting thing is even in the interview he gives, he does not deny Jon, David, Tico's side of the story.
Also, the documentary highlights WAN as something like a final straw. Making His addictions and seemingly legitimate desire to spend more time with his daughter are also there, and again Richie never denies this. The funny thing is, all the theories we have flown around have been confirmed as mostly all being true.
At least Jon admits it was his mistake that ultimately led to Richie leaving. At least in terms of not seeing the problem increasing, or ignoring it.
