I listen to it as a stand alone album and don't compare it to anything else... I like what I like and really don't give a shit what other people think... You can all hate it but as long as I like it, that's all I care about...
AMEN! People here are so anal about every little detail, every little note, guitar sound, etc. Just enjoy the music! What I posted earlier from People magazine is based the feel of the music and the meaning, not if Phil X plays the guitar a certain way or if it's too soft or too rock, whatever! And especially of Jon's voice! They enjoy what Jon is singing about and how the song sounds and feels, not if his voice can handle it or not, like so many here are soooo obsessed with! Like I said many times, just be happy the band is still around and making music, just chill!! and stop being so anal! BTW RDKopper, what I just said was not meant for you personally, just the others here on this board,

Lots of people dislike it; however, I am not one of them. I do wish Phil had been used more instead of Shanks though.

THINFS is only one of a handful of Bon Jovi albums where I don't skip any tracks, the others being KTF and These Days, apart from both Jon's solo albums. It is the fact that when I play these albums I actually need to stop and listen, compared for example to the 80's stuff which I just play as background music.

Also, I freaking love bubblegum pop/rock. Some new bands are doing it really, really well like The 1975 and even The Trews newest single goes in that direction.

Also, do you not like Slippery or NJ? Half the songs on both are "bubblegum pop" like lay your hands on me, bad name, 99 in the shade, Bad Medicine, Raise your hands, etc etc.

I love that genre, but not necessarily this song. It was an attempt that kinda didn't work.
I hear what you are hearing in Roller Coaster that makes you think, "The Middle," but I agree with MyGuitar. They really don't sound that much alike. They have different dynamics, for one. The Middle is more straight ahead driving whereas Roller Coaster mimics the pacing of a roller coaster with the peaks and valleys. What lyrically/vocally drives the songs is nothing alike. This one is more on you, but they do both fit the genre you just outlined above.

I can see why some people wouldn't like it much as musically the sound isn't drastically different from BB/WAN, especially some of Shank's guitar work on Ghost and NYD, but the songs themselves are actually good songs regardless and any production/vocal issues don't take that away for me. They have their moments, and I think they do the deeper and throwaway stuff both just as well.

I think what makes myself and others like the songs is that they actually have resonance and come from an honest place. Jon writing from personal experience/pain rather than imagining the pain/situation like it had on the last few records. It's more genuine and easier to relate to.

The production/mixing is hit and miss again. I think on the whole it sounds fine. I don't have any issues with any effects on Jon's voice on the album as lets face it, it's a shit show to start with so wasn't expecting much. Only the "time flies by" line in Rollercoaster, and the weakness in Knockout sounds out as poor for me.

But, it is disappointing to have such a good band, but yet make them sound not so good. I mean, Tico pounds the shit out of his drums, such a good drummer. But they sound so weak at times. Phil X too, as said already criminally underused and hidden on some songs. To take such a great sounding band and make some sound worse on record is a pretty poor show. But equally, some of the dancier bits and electronic/keyboard stuff are well implemented- Born Again Tomorrow especially.

But luckily we have decent live versions to accompany the record, and the songs come alive more. This especially true on songs like THINFS & God Bless This Mess.

I guess it depends on your expectations, I wasn't expecting a huge deviation from the last few records, although a bit more Phil would have been nice. Maybe some people would have preferred it sounding like the live performances? Either way, for now at least I think it's a decent solid effort that stands up well from anything post-2000.

Pretty much sums up everything I agree with.

To me, the production isn't THAT bad. It certainly isn't great but people are making it a bigger deal than it really is. Whether that's just because they don't like John Shanks (I'm not his biggest fan as a producer either) or not, I don't know but I don't think it's that bad.

Lyrically, it's easily the best since 'These Days' and nobody can deny that, really. 'Living With The Ghost' lyrics alone blow pretty much every song out of the water post 2000. This album meant something to JBJ and came from a dark place and you can tell that.

It's not got enough 'rock' songs on it but 'The Devils In The Temple' is fantastic and this is the direction I'd love the band to go in for future releases. A bit more like that...

Phil X is pretty much non-existent. I mean, let him loose!! I don't think the guitar work is that bad on the album and some of the riffs I really like listening too but I can see where people are coming from. One thing that really annoys me is when they do extended outros on live performances but never have them on the studio album. I absolutely love the outro on 'Born Again Tomorrow' live yet it finishes so suddenly on the studio. Why? Same with THINFS. It wouldn't fit on the studio version the way they done the outro live but you see what I mean. I just don't get it.

I am still very much loving this album. Playing it everyday and I still love some songs just as much as I did on first listen. It's been discussed before but if you swapped some of the 'filler' (I don't think we have many filler songs on this album personally) with some songs from Burning Brides (A Teardrop, Fingerprints.. even WDR properly on the album) then this would be a FANTASTIC album, in my opinion.

This.

Nothing worse that when JBJ was writing about a recession - that would never affect him and being jobless and houses being repossessed when they are charging 1000s of dollars/Pounds/Euros for their Diamond circle seats.

I like the record, still. It's a good outing for this day and age.

I will however agree with many about Phil. Having such a player in the band and then not use him and replace him with Shanks on the record is borderline insanity - on the other side of the said line

The best guitar solo is on one of the worst songs in my opinion (BAT). Just adding to the volume of just ****ing use Phil... I actually don't mind Shanks playing - especially the few longer solo's we've heard I'd like them to work together maybe, Shanks direction but Phil's execution. For example Shanks solo on We Don't Run is melodically better than Phil's adaptation imo, but Phil's hits your ears like rock should. God, if Devil's in the Temple had a proper solo...
