Default Is Teardrop to the sea about Richie?

I was watching an interview with Jon at http://www.vancouversun.com/entertai...697/story.html where he says A Teardrop To The Sea is the serious lyrical content of ‘you broke my heart,’ and it got me thinking.

Reading the song's lyrics makes me think it could be about Richie leaving the band.

A Judas kiss - what Richie did?

Quote:
I got what I wanted
I paid every cost
I'd give it all back
To get back what I've lost
Jon wanted to tour too early, he admitted it was too soon afterwards.

Quote:
They shake my hand
Pat my back
They know my drink
Welcome back
The life of the party
Tears of a clown
Can't hear a heartbreak
The music's too loud
His response to Richie leaving was as if nothing has happened and the show must go on but in reality it had a bigger effect than he let everyone know. I remember the When we were beatiful documentary where he said he won't allow others to see how he really feels.

Am I reading too much into the lyrics?

Never actually considered this idea. But as you just posted the 2nd verse - in that context I finally seem to understand what the lyrics are about. Also the lines "my treasure just rags, wings that don't fly" make mmore sense to me now.

"Love pick me up"? Is that the new "look at all the hair we had"?

I always thought it could be about Richie. Anybody else got any ideas?

I love this theory, I've been listening to those lyrics and trying to decipher. My initial thoughts was big rock and roll star, missing out on family life, with the shake my hand pat my back lyrics referring to big exec/celeb parties where Jon's there and smiling, but would rather be at home enjoying his children.

In a nutshell, that's how I considered the lyrics. The idea that it's about Richie's departure may make more sense. I didn't expect Jon to actually release any material about that though, airing dirty laundry in public and all that.

The regret in the song is sad, it's heartfelt and real, whatever it's about.

I read that Jon , said was a about the record company and the parting of ways, his experience of the last 30 years, obviously BB is more of a dig. But if you go through the lyrics it does make sense

My interpretation of that same interview is that there are 2 songs on the CD that address the end of an era with the record company breaking Jon's heart. Burning Bridges, obviously. And A Teardrop to the Sea, which has the serious lyrics.

I did have a sense that this bit could be about Richie, maybe how they couldn't see him having a break down over the touring machine.

I thought Teardrop and Burning Bridges were the bookends that addressed the end of the era with the record company. In fact, I felt that Take Back the Night should have been left off the CD to make BB truly "the last song you can sell."

I know they add bonus tracks to encourage purchasing of the import version (or local version in Japan) but in this case BB does seem like the perfect last song for the CD, and I'm kind of glad the version I bought doesn't include Take Back the Night.
