Default We Weren't Born To Follow (New Single)

Aloha !

This single is shit. The yeah yeah yeah's make me cringe and the chorus almost has the same chord progression as It's My Life, Bounce, Have A Nice Day, etcetera. It sounds like a wannabe A side. Sure, it's catchy but it doesn't rock, for ****s sake. It sounds like Kelly Clarkson.

Salaam Aleikum,
Sebastiaan

Calling the album "Circle" makes perfect sense to me. I think the song is a mix of Born to be my Baby (especially the chorus) and It's my Life with minor influences from WSYCGH (the Shankesque wall of sound with single instruments diffusing into one loud noise) and Lost Highway (yeah yeah yeah).

It could have been a lot worse I think and it's certainly a very radiofriendly first single, but I'm a little disappointed. The song is just so ****in predictable. It could have just as well been the first single for any of the post 2000 albums. Songwriting by numbers and playing it safe. What happened to the creativity of this band? Will keep going like this forever? What happened to artistic development? Let's hope for the rest of the album..

Its just the same as HAND isnt it? stuff from there. Just the same sorta simple chord dragging rock. Not, riff rock orientated like i was expecting. And when John said "guitar" i was expecting alot more too. And where were those loud drum fills too? I thought the first single would epitomise the style of the album. Its just classic post 2000s rock, the style everyone else does. Nothing in this track for me shouts out BON JOVI, nothing in it makes it any different from anything else like it used to.

Yeah, it's the same frustrating story. They promise something meaningful and issue orientated, then just deliver a safe, generic Jovi-by-numbers tune. The same thing that happened with HAND...I think the other two songs that have leaked are far more interesting and at least hint that the band are trying something different and being creative....and there's that 'Can we Be Happy Now' song that's supposed to be a reaction to Obama's election...'We Weren't Born To Follow' though is just too lazy and unimaginative. Pleasant enough, but I was hoping for more...

I like it. Doesn't say much but I do. It's catchy. Obviously, I wanted a rock song really badly, but I still think it's good.
