Bon Jovi to do a concert in Thailand in December

THE Thai public and private sectors are planning historic rock concerts featuring world-renowned artists like Pink Floyd, Aerosmith, Madonna, Bon Jovi and The Alan Parsons Project as part of the grand celebrations of His Majesty the King's 72nd birthday on Dec 5.

The concerts are planned from Dec 1 to Jan 1 at giant outdoor stages to be set up at Sattahip Naval Base and Utapao Air Base in Chon Buri province, chairman of the House committee on tourism, Sansak Ngampichet, said yesterday.

The Tourism Authority of Thailand (TAT) and the Millennium Co Ltd are the main organisers of the shows, while K&B Event will be responsible for mobilising funds. About 50 groups have offered to sponsor the concerts, with 30 of them promising US$1 million (Bt38 million) each, he said.

''We plan shows by Madonna, Bon Jovi, Pink Floyd, Aerosmith and The Alan Parsons Project, among others,'' Sansak said.

The cost of the performances by each of those world-famous artists will be about Bt600 million (US$15.79 million) and the concerts will take place on Saturdays only. Shows on other days will feature Thai folk arts and music, he said.

The TAT expects the rock concerts will attract some 800,000 foreign tourists and 700,000 Thais, with the receipts at about Bt50 billion. The organising committee also plans to present at least Bt72 million to His Majesty on the occasion of the sixth circle of his birth, Sansak said.
