NEWARK — A cleaning team wipes down newly installed seats, while hard-hat-wearing construction workers saw plastic into chunks to finish a penalty box. And about 100 feet in front of them, a focused rock star goes into Open All Night for the second time.
"Let's go from the top again," Jon Bon Jovi says to his bandmates. "There's something about it that was weighed down."
It's all prep work for the 10 gigs the band is playing to inaugurate Newark's Prudential Arena, which started Thursday night. After that comes a world tour (U.S. dates start in February, hitting Detroit, Orlando, Chicago, Washington, Dallas, Los Angeles and Atlanta along the way) in support of their country-tinged album Lost Highway, which has gone gold. In a post-rehearsal interview, Bon Jovi says that this time around, he's fired up about performing.
"My fingernails are usually embedded in the driveway, and they have to take me kicking and screaming. I don't want to leave my life," says the married father of four. "Once you get to the first hotel, the first night, you remember that this is what you do for a living. But this time, I'm OK with it. Maybe because we're starting at home."
