A mix of veteran artists and newcomers led the nominees for the 45th annual Grammy Awards, announced Tuesday (January 7), with five nominations each, with Bruce Springsteen, Norah Jones, Eminem, and Avril Lavigne scoring nods in the key categories record, song, and album of the year.
Other five-time noms include rapper Nelly, rising R&B star Ashanti, rocker Sheryl Crow, and soul singer Raphael Saadiq.
Springsteen, who returned this past year with his first new album with the E Street Band since 1984's Born In The U.S.A., scored nominations for album of the year and best rock album for The Rising, song of the year, best male rock vocal performance, and best rock song for the title track.
Newcomer Jones scored a nomination for record of the year for "Don't Know Why," while her Come Away With Me was nominated for album of the year, and she received a best new artist nomination.
Lavigne's five nominations include song of the year and female pop vocal performance for "Complicated," best new artist, best pop vocal album for her debut album Let Go, and best female rock vocal performance for the track "Sk8er Boi."
Other best new artist nominees include Ashanti, Michelle Branch, and John Mayer.
Eminem and Nelly will go head to head in three categories: Eminem's "Without Me" received nominations for record of the year and best male rap solo performance, while his album The Eminem Show got the nod for album of the year; Nelly's song "Dilemma" with Kelly Rowland is up for record of the year, while "Hot In Herre" is nominated for best male rap solo performance, and his Nellyville album is nominated for album of the year.
Alan Jackson and Dixie Chicks garnered four nominations each. Jackson's song, "Where Were You (When The World Stopped Turning)," written in the wake of the events of September 11 got nominations for song of the year, best country song, and best male country vocal performance, while the album Drive got the nod for best country album. The Chicks's album Home is up for album of the year, and best country album; their single "Long Time Gone" (which itself took a nod for best country song for songwriter Darrell Scott) is nominated for best country performance by a duo or group with vocal; and their album track "Lil' Jack Slade" is nominated for best country instrumental performance.
Pink and Britney Spears scored two nominations each: Pink's "Get The Party Started" and Spears's "Overprotected" are up for best female pop vocal performance, while Pink's M!ssundaztood and Spears's Britney will compete for best pop vocal album.
The 45th Annual Grammy Awards will air on CBS from 8-11 p.m. ET on February 23 (live on the East Coast, tape delayed on the West Coast).
