18 February 2003 - Auburn Hills, MI, USA Concert Review 20 February 2003
Not impressed....

A review by John-Paul Bonadonna / racer1977@yahoo.com

First off, let me be totally honest. I'm NOT a Bon Jovi diehard fan. I like a few songs, and was only at the concert because I got free tickets. Second, I watched the show from the upper level suites, really high up there.

The show started with the rotation of the laughable satellite props doing their rotation before turning into video screens. What anyone with a side-seat will tell you though is that the standard projection screen gives you an image that's 100% clearer! Also, the show was hampered by problems with the main video screen. They lost vertical sync, the picture was bouncing all over the place before they turned it off.

The sound was also a disappointment. I've seen U2 at the Palace for Elevation and it sounded WAY better! I was actually FURTHER away from the stacks for U2 and yet could hear every note crystal clear. Last night I found myself wanting everything turned up - the guitar leads, EVERY keyboard part, and especially the background vocals. I couldn't even hear Sambora sing the repeat "WANTED!" in Dead or Alive.

The show started at a peak and then quickly faded - the hits were loaded at the front half of the set (other than Bad Medicine) and the ending was downright laughable - Shout followed by a goodnight, and then a ONE song encore?!?!?!? Twist and Shout no less!!! Hillarious!

To their credit...

Richie rocks - love everything about him, beautiful vocals on I'll Be There For You, in fact, his vocals contain the soul that Jon's lack. Guitar playing was fantastic - he just looks right holding a guitar, you know? BUT, I wish I could have heard the notes! They've got to rip your head off, and they weren't.

AND, it's hard to generate as much excitement as 'It's My Life', 'Livin' On A Prayer' and 'Dead or Alive' do in concert. Very cool!
