18 November 2000 - Auburn Hills, MI, USA Concert Review 20 November 2000
Bon Jovi - Auburn Hills 11-18-00

A review by Steve Cunningham / stevenjc@umich.edu

Setlist (the order of a couple of the songs early in the set might be slightly out of order but all the songs are right): One Wild Night / You Give Love A Bad Name / Captain Crash & The Beauty Queen From Mars / Keep The Faith / Livin' On a Prayer / Born To Be My Baby / It's My Life / Damned / Thank You For Loving Me / Blaze Of Glory / Someday I'll Be Saturday Night / Lay Your Hands On Me / I'll Sleep When I'm Dead-Rockin' All Over The World / Bad Medicine-Shout

Encore 1: The Next 100 Years / I'll Be There For You
Encore 2: Just Older / Wanted Dead Or Alive

I'm 19 years old and always knew about Bon Jovi but didn't really get into them until about 2 years ago, since then I've been waiting patiently for my chance to see them, and they didn't dissapoint anyone in the sold out crowd.

Having read reviews of previous shows, this one wasn't terribly different, the setlist staying pretty much the same as the other shows, except "Blood On Blood" was replaced with "Damned," as the audience let out a big "huh?" as probably not many of them listened to "These Days" very closely. The performance beared a striking resemblance to the "Live In London" video, with Prayer, Bad Name, and Faith coming early in the set and the regular set ending with "Sleep" and that "Bad Medicine-Shout" bit. No one seemed to mind but you think after five years they would have gotten a little creative with the setlist.

But as for the performance, it was standard BJ, Jon pulling all his usual tricks, telling the hotel story in the middle of "Sleep When I'm Dead," and pulling all the usual audience participation moments (the end of "You Give Love A Bad Name" being a personal favorite). The best quote of the night came when Jon was talking about the band's hiatus and said "We leave you to your own devices for five years and the best you can come up with are these boy bands? Well tonight you've got yourself a real band." He also thanked everyone for sticking with the band for 17 years and 10(?) albums. During "Captain Crash" Jon forgot the words to the first verse, and then at the fadeout of the song he found someone he knew in the audience and started talking with him, and tried to get the guy's girlfriend to come on stage and dance with him, and the camera found the guy and his girl and they were on the screens for a while at the end of the song, which made for a very sloppy version of it.

But the rest was what we've come to expect; perfection, with a lot of audience singalongs and perfect execution of all the band's singles, along with a few novelties like "Saturday Night" and "Damned," and of course a few new tracks. According to Jon, they will tour the US again next summer, hopefully not at Pine Knob, one of the most dreadfully awful places to see a rock band, which i think is where they played on the US leg of the "These Days" tour. Anyways, it was a great show, everyone go see it.
