26 June 2003 - Manchester, UK Concert Review 28 June 2003
Never Say Goodbye to Old Trafford

A review by Jane

Bon Jovi are the greatest band you'll ever see live. At Old Trafford they excelled (as usual) performing their timeless anthems: Livin’ On A Prayer, Wanted, Born To Be My Baby, You Give Love A Bad Name, and Bad Medicine.

Jon's a great crowd pleaser and lapped up the feedback from the crowd. He even referred to Beckham leaving Man U by saying he couldn’t go the distance before performing Distance (good linking!) which was very funny for me since I’m a Liverpool FC fan! As a female fan all I can say is “wow” he just gets better looking with age and that smile just takes my breath away. My 2003 Bon Jovi calendar has been stuck on March for months now (chin-dropping photo of Jon showing off his chest!) but June and November are also good months (you girls know exactly what I mean). My husband keeps changing it to the correct month to only find it being put back to March so he’s resigned to the fact that it’s going to be March until Jan 2004 when I get the new calendar LOL

Richie was excellent on lead vocals for I’ll Be There For You, giving Jon a bit of a break. I have to say though that Jon is the real essence of Bon Jovi and having such a great front man makes all the difference. Richie held his own taking front stage though and I’m sure he enjoyed it. He was wearing a black t-shirt with Sambora in red – just in case we didn’t know who he was LOL At the end of the concert the crowd went wild as Jon highlighted each member of the band – then Tico pointed to Jon and the stadium nearly lifted with the noise.

All in all it was a fabulous concert and anyone who isn’t a Bon Jovi fan doesn’t know what they’re missing. My only criticism was with the choice of encore. Lola was good but Capt Crash should never have been played, never mind as an encore. It's got to be the worst Bon Jovi song ever but a rock band as great as BJ can get away with doing one crap song in their 20 year history, they’ve earned it :) They really should have ended on a high with something like Livin’ On A Prayer. I know their second to last song was Bad Medicine but it’s spoilt by the whole Shout thing. They really should stick to what they do best – their own material. Afterall, that’s what’s made them the great band they are today.

Can’t wait to see them again despite that little bit of criticism because afterall they ROCK !

I hope they continue for many more years yet.

“Never say goodbye, never say goodbye
You and me and my old friends
Hoping it would never end”
