18 January 2006 - Charlotte, NC, USA Concert Review 5 February 2006

A review by mellyjovi

Bon Jovi -- Charlotte, NC Jan 18, 2006

The first song was "Last Man Standing." This song was
surrounded by lots of fan reaction when it was
released first in the Box Set and then in its second
flavor as recorded for "Have a Nice Day." The back
section of the arena had a chance to see at least Jon
a bit closer than they would have if he had only
performed onstage. After the first song, Jon made his
way through the crowd (with assistance from security)
up to the stage. After reaching the stage, the
anticipated "You Give Love a Bad Name" was next. After
Jon delivers the opening line, "shot through the
heart--and you're to blame"-- he pauses for the
crowd's response "You give love a bad name!" This is
the usual opening for "Bad Name" and the crowd would
likely be disappointed without that opportunity to
call it back to the band. Lots of energy filled the
arena during this song. It is one of those songs that
I would easily say "I've heard it enough" but it was
pretty clear from the crowd reaction that they wanted
to hear this one!

During the show, many new songs in addition to "Last
Man Standing" made their appearance: "Complicated,"
"The Story of My Life," "Novocaine," "Have a Nice
Day," "Welcome to Wherever You Are," and "Who Says You
Can't Go Home." Overall, it was a pleasant surprise to
hear so many of the NEW songs alongside their old
hits. The classic hits were played (Wanted, Prayer,
Raise Your Hands, It's My Life, Sleep when I'm Dead,
Blaze of Glory, Runaway, Bad Medicine, and more).
While the show was great and had a nice blend of
music, it would have been nice for the concert to last
an extra 30 minutes or so to make room for "Lay Your
Hands On Me," "Keep The Faith," and *anything* at all
from the '95 release, "These Days." It's just a better
show for Jon and the boys if they do that "shakey
thing" with Keep the Faith!

About halfway through the concert, Jon made his way
back into the crowd and into the stands about halfway
back in the arena. I had been reading the other reviews
so I was expecting this; however, it was clear that a
lot of the fans did NOT expect this. There, he
performed an acoustic version of Blaze of Glory
followed by Bed of Roses.

During the instrumental parts of BOR, he worked his
way back to the stage pausing along the way to dance
with ladies, give handshakes and high fives to guys,
and steal a kiss or maybe two from female fans. The
best part of the crowd interaction was when Jon
stopped to hug a girl who was very tiny and unable to
walk. I am sure this made HER day in a big way!

There were two cover songs which have been appearing
throughout the tour on a regular basis: Tom Petty's "I
won't back down" and I believe Otis Redding did the
original of the other one, titled "Treat Her Right."
Of the two, I prefer "Treat Her Right" done in the
"Jovi fashion" as Jon and the boys give it a little
extra something that it lacked before!

The concert lasted two hours and it took another hour
to get through the crowd and out onto the highway to
head home for the night. Everyone seemed to be in good
spirits and left the arena with smiles on their faces.

Overall, I would say as I have said many times: Bon
Jovi Rocks! They surely do! It took me only 20
years to get this close to the stage during a Bon Jovi
show, and it was totally worth it. I hope I do get
there at least once again (close as this time--sixth
row baby!) Next stop for ME to see them is Feb. 8,
2006 (though not as close to the stage). I'm ready and
counting the days!
