It depends mostly on what people are doing as some activities are more demanding for the server than others. This software is written with huge forums in mind and full of optimizations that decrease the server load. Have you noticed that it takes some time for the forums to be marked as read after you read the last unread post of certain forum? That's one of those optimizations.
