It was a choice between either anonymous voting or everyone being able to see who was winning all the way through, ruining the surprise at the end. Those are the only two ways to do it without Peter being onboard. I opted to do it in such a way that I'd know who voted for who, but that no one else would know who was in the lead until it was announced.

I'm not entirely sure how you expect me to use the knowledge of who voted for who for evil .... ?
