Songwriters like Bob Dylan, Neil Young, Bruce Springsteen, a recent example is The Hold Steady's Craig Finn, tell stories in their songs. Morrisey's another example, his lyrics for The Smiths told stories of life in working class Manchester in a witty, engaging way. When has Jon done that?

Best written my ****ing arse. Bob Dylan's Tombstone Blues is a well written song, not ****ing Summertime. The songs you mentioned are generic ballads set to feeble Springsteen impersonations, apart from Summertime, which is a generic mid-tempo song that's lyrics don't even tell a story.

****ing AWFUL post from you there.
Im sorry, but do you have to compare Bon Jovi's music to the likes of Bob Dylan? We all know that he is a much better song writer than Jon. How about you compare thoose songs to song writers in his leage? It's like comparing a Kid Basketball player to a Pro..... Bob Dylan isn't know for his impressive singing or guitar or anthems.... he's known for his song writing. So next time think before you compare. And anyways, I was trying to understand why some of peoples favorite songs were on the dudes list (forgot the name). This thread was the best songs of this decade of Bon Jovi, not the best Bob Dylan or Springsteen Songs of the decade.

And jeez, everyone here is taking music too seriously. If you take down every song you know and strip it down, trying to find bad things about it, then you will be hard pressed to find any good music. Music is meant to be ENJOYED, not to be put through a garberator and it's parts being examined. Well of course you could do that, but like I said, you won't truly enjoy most songs for what they are. A prime example of me loving a song for what it is is the song "Everybody's Broken". Lots hate it, but just the mix of the 12 string acoustic and the 6 string electric and the lyrics and.... I don't know. Maybe it's a copied melody. Maybe it's too much of a simple song for you to like. Maybe it's too overdone. Maybe it's not enough. I just screw it all and listen to enjoy it.

And at another note, I didn't say anything at all about summertime being a well written song.... I have no idea where you got that from.....

Yes, THAT was a great post! Thank you! You just took the words right out off my mouth!

I also like "Everybody's Broken" for some reason, though knowing it's not a great song at all, but I can't help but enjoy it. And that is exactly what music is about. And that is why I'm here, because I enjoy the music of theband this forum is devoted to. Apart from that song, I'm tired of all this bitching about music and comparing and stuff.

For the record: Jon's best songwriting is in "Bed Of Roses" and "Dry County", according to my opinion. And of course, "These Days" overall has some pretty decent lyrics. In this decade, even like "Everybody's Broken", the attempt is there but gets lost in some cliché phrases... I know, but still the boys make some damn good music. Et voilá.

I've stuck to album tracks rather than b-sides, and it says best songs they've "written", so I'm concentrating on the songwriting aspect more than anything.

Dirty Little Secret
Novocaine
Last Man Standing
Any Other Day
Make A Memory
Mystery Train
The Distance
Next 100 Years
Undivided
Just Older

In no particular order....

1. It's My Life
2. Just Older
3. Neurotica
4. Undivided
5. Breathe
6. The Distance
7. Have A Nice Day
8. Novocaine
9. I Am
10. Lonely

...and to think I complain about the mediocrity of their last 4 albums, there's still at least 10 that I like.

All this could change if we have a new album by the end of the year, but thats pretty much it.

Y'know, not everyone has to limit their musical tastes to stuff that either came out in the 60s and 70s or sounds just like it came out in the 60s or 70s
