Sticking Michael Jackson's name on it seemed like a good idea at the time because they could bandy his name about whether he was there or not and it was to grab ratings. They justified it by his consistent achievements in breakthrough videos. Blah blah blah.

No. That was the first year they started calling it "The Michael Jackson Video Vanguard Award." Jon always refers to it as a lifetime achievement award, which is what it is, but the MJVVA was the proper name. I remember being ticked that they stuck MJ's name on it the year they gave it to Bon Jovi. Do they still call it that with all his scandals and legal troubles or have they renamed it again?

well...ok!I didn't know that.

But even VH-1, which is an MTV company, called it MTV LIFETIME ACHIEVEMENT AWARD in the Behind The Music documentary...wasn't just Jon.
It sucks, indeed, to get a MJ Award. Iremember when U2 won it and somebody from teh crowd screamed BON JOOOOVI! Bono smiled and said:"This is New York, isn't it?!" and intorduced The Ramones....well...

Considering MJ's videos have pretty much set the template for music videos for the last 20 years, and bringing about the 'MTV generation' you cant deny the award isnt deservered.
