It's like anything else again, to play an instrument basically will only take a matter of months. I learnt to play a few chords on guitar (with the intent to lear), and as soon as I familiarised myself with them, I could change chords pretty well. I'm sure I could have learnt guitar to a basic level very quickly. It;s the same with keyboards. I could teach anybody basic keyboards, i.e chords, basic rythems e.t.c. But to learn an instrument properly does take hours and hours of practice.

No, Emerson being much better than David doesn't make him poor, but it does somwhat undermine his abilities. David is basically the sort of keyboard player I really don't like. He has the technical ability, because he had a clasical trainging, but he's unimaginative, and systematic in his paying. The brilliance of Emerson is he's exploring his instrument, yes, he has the classical background, but he's developed his style from this. It's the same with Jon Lord, they don't teach you to play like that, you have to find it for yourself. That's why I find the album uninspiring, he's an average piano player, with little imagination, and no style. I can identify Emerson from a bar of music, because the way he plays the keys are so distinct, the way he attacks them. For somebody like Emerson, his style is subtle, yet instantly identifyable. It's the same with Wakeman, Lord, Hammer e.t.c You can tell who is playing instantly, because they are so distinct. You could put anybody on the keys for Bon Jovi, and you wouldn't tell the difference, because he has no idividual style to his playing.
i'm saying its easier to start to learn keyboards yes - it's just as difficult as any other once you start playing complex stuff...

but for example at school we had to do music, and everyone was taught how to play keyboards, and you had people there in my class who could do it basically who can't do simple multiplication...

Now I really think that it's not your taste. It's also a matter of wanting to leave the classical way. If you want to keep the rules (and it seems like David tries that) it's sure that it isn't easy to develope a unique style. because then you can't just say: "Hey, I like these notes and I'll take them" if they don't fit to the key. If you got some chords you can't say "let's keep the difference of these two notes at zero" (sorry but I don't know what Kadenz, Prime, Dominante,... means in English) and you can't play two notes at the same time even if they don't fit together (like in IML)
I think Dave just wanted to keep his classical background.

i'm perfectly happy for him to keep it - but would rather he use it in BJ rather than doing a solo project, and then coming back to BJ just to play chords on strings and piano, and play random pre-programmed sound bites and drum loops
