His voice started to declining in the late 90s. In the Bon Jovi songs of the Destination Anywhere promo shows you could clearly see the difference, when they got together you could see how he was struggling to hit the high notes in These Days.

There's a video of Something To Believe In in Osaka 01, if I'm not wrong - it was a mess.
That's why he stated that 2008 till 2011 had some of the best vocals since 1995. Sure his range wasn't the same anymore, but with his change of the technique (even though it sounded much more nasal) he came close to it and had a lot more confidence on many occasions than he had had in the early to mid-2000's.

Very interesting. The smoking can't have helped but I think the lack of confidence also helps explain the static sets. Mind you that could also be down to Phil not knowing as many songs.

Ah, oh, I agree then. In Lost Highway and The Circle tours he sounded really good.

Watching this video of Bad Medicine from the latest show of the tour it's obvious that this tour has helped Jon's voice improve hugely. A lot of people thought touring would destroy his voice further but it's done the opposite...

I just wonder how much better he can get...

I'm not sure I agree. I think you have to judge the tour in it's entirety. One ok performance doesn't mask the poor ones and vice versa. One thing that I really think is helping is Jon's crowd interactions. It's great to see and he actually often sounds better for it - perhaps overthinking on stage hinders him at times.

Some interesting comments under this video: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2ifQ...95252575974418

"Its sounds bad. this is 3th concert have same problem. Its an amateur how use Jovi the microphone. Read the users manual Bon Jovi! I dont understand nobody told you this after this years. If i do an FOH or mon mix and one singer do that i told him take some lessons from me, or its the last time i mix for you. I want perfect sound, not this. Its the same if you in an race car try win an race and sit backwards in the car. A millions cost sound equipment wasted of bad handling of one microphone."

"JBJ wraps his hand around the capsule of the microphone almost all of the time (like many of the rappers do, also). This leads to a thin, compressed vocal sound. I am an FOH engineer also and I absolutely HATE it! Horrible attitude and a pain in the ass for every FOH on this planet!"

Do we really need to wait long till it comes to this?

Btw. Found some interesting opinion on the KISS forum. Who knows, maybe Jon's case isn't that much different and it's inevitable to all those singers abusing their chords through years of constant touring?

"Since his voice started going downhill I always wondered what happened to his vocal cords from a physical/medical point of view.
I mean, what's the issue? Noduses? Vocal cord deterioration?"

"I developed vocal fold paresis in 2009 and Paul sounds like he is suffering from an extreme case of the same. Probably nodes on top of that too from having to sing 'around' the symptoms of the paralysis. I feel bad for him. Sadly, paresis is rarely ever treatable. A common procedure is botox injectons of the affected fold which helps to close the gap and allow for the left and right folds to make contact. It's super short term and must be repeated constantly and regularly. After the procedure, you're severely hoarse for about 7-10 days and then you might have a couple of weeks where you can function before the botox wears off and you're back to square one. It's not at all a long-term solution. Neurosurgery is probably the only option and the risks far outweigh the benefits."

***

The question is:

Is it then too late to perform the surgery and all Jon has to do is carpe diem?

OR

Is it "just" a psychological barrier/fear in Jon's mind and "all" he needs is some couch therapy and a lot of love?

It's painful to see all those rock stars fade away because of damn age. Ageing is not fun :/
