Funnily enough I was listening to the album last week for the first time in ages, and was thinking much the same as the opening question.
I like some of TLFR, but what gets me is why they re-worked ballads as ballads. I don't see the point in that. Songs like LOAP, Bad Name, KTF etc I understand, as they are totally different to the originals. But Always, IBTFY - why?
They should have gone with some of the less known stuff instead, and re-worked them. For example, I think Without Love would work as a really dark ballad. Songs like Secret Dreams, Fear, even Hey God.
Don't get me wrong, I'm not saying that would have saved the album from the almost unanimous hatred it receives, but for me, at least I could say "that didn't really work" or "I don't like it", but I could understand why they tried it.
