I think I have seen an interview where Richie says he can play just about everything, including piano to at least some degree of quality. If that is the case I can't see why bass (the easiest to adapt to from guitar) would be hard for him.

Didn't he also play a load of different stringed instruments for TLFR?

All this "are you a guitarist?" chaff. I doubt anyone here is actually a guitarist anyway. Play guitar yes, but actually makes a living from it? Naaa
What's the difference between playing guitar and playing it for profit? It's still the same strings and notes.

I think it should be, can you play guitar, not are you a guitarist. I run every night but I am not a runner (but I do wank every night and I am a wanker, so maybe I am wrong). My point was pedantic, had nothing to do with ability. I have been playing for 15 years, I can play the guitar but if somebody asked me if I am a guitarist, I would say no, I am a writer. Anyway, typically someone took the least important point of a post.

I know a likely reply would be, "so you only define yourself as one thing?" I would answer good point, although as I said I was being pedantic after pointing out reasoning why Sambora could play the bass probably easily, re the topic of the thread.

I didn't mention the rest of your post because I agreed with it but didn't agree with the last thing you said. Fair enough.

I'd bet that Richie can play bass, but maybe he isn't as imaginative when it comes to laying down interesting basslines in the studio, hence why they have Hugh in studio. That's also my theory as to why they had Hugh in the studio and Alec on tour through Keep the Faith. Alec could play just fine, but he probably wasn't as good as coming up with interesting basslines in the studio. Obviously he's got more stage presence, so they had him just for on stage. Kind of a Milli Vanilli thing they had going on.

Pretty much how I feel. Being able to play the bass and being a good bassist isn't the same thing. Anyone with half decent guitar chops could duplicate Hugh's bass lines, but how many would've come up with them? It's not always about technical ability, there are many guitar players whou could play rings around Richie (like Phil X), but he's the one who wrote the songs, the riffs and the solos.

I found this website not too long ago; it lists Richie among child music prodigies, saying he began playing music at age 3.

Must be some sort of piss take, or just some random Richie fan that couldn't help putting him in there!

Hey look, Ronnie O' Sullivan is on there too heh. I keep seeing him outside work, mind you I do work near the Crucible so I suppose it's no great shock

The same Phil X who can't play half of Richie's stuff properly?

You've just gone to prove once again that you are seriously lacking in knowledge.
