I mean....I see where you're trying to go with this but this thread is asking people to rank the albums in the order they like them. If there's one set answer based on quality that is predetermined what's the point? It can't be about fact, it has to be about "Where do you rank the albums" and there's nothing shittier than giving your thoughts and being told it's laughable by people who have the opposite viewpoint.

Sure it's odd to me to have to have that opinion but I tried to do this challenge and Slippery kept getting ranked lower than Have A Nice Day because the style of music I listen to lately lends that way and I have great memories of that album. This is a flawed exercise.

In the same context would it not be laughable that someone thought Justin Bieber was a better song writer than Jon Bon Jovi? To us it's laughable, but to them our opinion is laughable. It all depends on what point of view you are coming from. I'm sure that there's a Bon Jovi fan out there that doesn't like Wanted but loves Save The World, and they should be able to express that opinion without being laughed at. Of course discussions, disagreements and differences of opinion are fine, but their opinion is 100% as valid as anyone elses, whether you argree with it or not. As someone who grew up being riduclued for being a rock fan, in a school that was full or rap music and dance music fans, I think people should be allowed to voice their opinions on music without being laughed at or attacked.

Nice line but we know that's not true. Rationality and emotionality are not independent.

I think you are confusing two things. Everyone is entitled to their opinion and should be able to express it without being attacked, however, questions about artistic beauty do permit of better and worse answers.

Michelangelo's David is a better sculpture (and piece of art) than some kid's attempt at making a clay ashtray. That is as factual a statement as saying the Earth is round. Now, the parent of the child who made the ashtray may prefer his or her kid's sculpture to Michelangelo's effort and that's fine. They may prefer one to the other, but there is a correct answer to which is better.

Steven Pinker's book The Blank Slate deals with this really well.

"This is an interesting way of looking at it, why do you think that" = debate inducing

"You must be deaf" = pure shithead.

I think that's what people are getting more up in arms about. For as much as people blame the band's output as the reason this board gets dead sometime, elitist behaviour from people setting the be-all-end-all of what's acceptable to like is a big part of it.

Now I can't speak for the person who who said it but I found it amusing rather than being a vile attack. However, you've called that person "a pure shithead" now while advocating for a civil discourse. Nice. Wawaweewaa.

Well of course you found it amusing, you weren't the person being told the way they like their music is wrong? Hundred percent I was over the line and apologize, I wasn't calling THEM a shithead, it's a shithead move to do. But it doesn't excuse me saying it. As a mod this place just frustrates the hell out of me sometimes.

Not confusing anything. I wasn't comparing Jon's songwriting to a kid who's just learned to play the guitar (which would be an appropriate comparison based on your Michaelangelo/child comment), it was to another multi-million selling song writer. My point still stands.
