I agree. Critics will never praise them, which is a shame. But does it matter in the end? They've been one of the top touring acts for 20 years and they've had incredible sales and a string of hits. People keep going back for more. That's what's real and what no one can argue against.

Nah, I don't give two shits about it. If I started paying attention to critics I'd have to delete my entire music library.

I just brought it up because you mentioned how none of them would make any critic's "best of" list, when I think it's more a "ew they're in Bon Jovi they CAN'T be that good" thing than a legitimate educated "I have listened to them and they suck" thing.

This made me curious as to whether Jovi had ever received critical kudos, even when they first hit the charts.

It turns out they did, but it was VERY short lived.

the absolutely first-class site www.acclaimedmusic.net has acquired critical best-of lists for several decades past and used statistical magic (I'm not even going to try to begin understanding how!) to combine these into definitive best-of lists for each year. Not to mention a top 2500 since time begin of both albums and songs.

Slippery When Wet received the 12th highest rating from all critics in 1986. Livin on a Prayer faired even better, reaching number 6 for the year. It is apparently the 556th best song of all time.

No other Bon Jovi material made the top 100 for any given year.

Which surprises me... I definitely remember KTF receiveing a hell of a lot of mainstream media attention. The song itself was definitely hailed as a brave new direction, strange as it may seem now.

Becky, you mentioned Tori - yes, I have seen her live. Yes, she is fantastic - to the point that I have enjoyed her solo shows massively more than those with her band - I feel let down when she doesn't completely monopolise my ear-time!

Unlike you, though, I wouldn't know where to begin If I found myself having a 1 on 1 conversation! She definitely is in her own world, and i'm not sure I would have the key!

I need to hear these bootlegs, care to share 'em?
