I think after the New Jersey tour Jon took a lot more of a professional and serious hold of the band. During the 80s the whole band were off their tits but the 80s were about excess and bands were expected to be quite loose and dangerous. From interviews and backstage footage it would seem Jon was the most sober and serious member who looked to be almost bullied on occasions.
The 90s heralded a completely different era for the band. I think Jon layed down some rules, possibly contractually, that stated no more wild antics. It looks like Alec didn't tow the line and was subsequently booted out.
I'm sure he received a nice pay off which included a clause to keep his mouth shut.
