Pretty good first effort!

Great album.
The guitar work is fantastic.
I know Jon don’t like them but the first two albums are musically excellent.

Can anyone confirm what version of Whole Lot of Leavin is on the European CD single? Is it the album version or the different take used with the music video?

This is Ken Tamplin analysing the studi recording of Prayer.

I've always said that he shoud teach Jon and help him

One of the things he discusses is the technique Jon used to sing it and why it is not healthy. And that's talking about studio work. He did more horrible things to his vocals live. It's a shame he didn't have a proper vocal coach back then. Maybe he would be left with more voice today.

Jon had all the coaching he could get. His voice however could never handle the shows. The amount of shows, lack of warming up, lack of time in between shows to recover, amount of songs slightly without his reach and length of shows backfired every single tour. The damage caused in the eighties was long solved in the early nineties.

Just curious, how do you know he have a vocal coach back then, and how to you know that he didn't warm up? Is this something he has discussed?

Personally, I think that once the voice is damaged it is very hard to recover fully from that. You can cover it up temporarily sure, but when a voice was a wrecked as Jon's was by the end of the Slippery tour, there is bound to be some lasting damage. He sounded considerably better by the New Jerset tour, so there had to be some coaching after the Slippery tour to get his voice back in shape, and to handle that tour better than he did on Slippery.

Yes, there's a number of quotes of him in the early and mid-90's discussing his work with Katie Agresta, one of THE top vocal coaches in the field. Even him talking about bringing her out on the road in 1993 when he felt beat up.
He also went back to this with a few quotes in the WWWB book.

Jon has mentioned it several times. Katie Agresta was hired when Jon's voice had died in the eighties and they've both gone on record saying it's her who helped him keep his voice throughout the Keep The Faith tour. On the This House Is Not For Sale tour one of her students (Marie Jo I think her name is) had joined Bon Jovi on tour to help him keep his voice. She was there front row telling him how to sing and pose.

As for the lack of warming up; yes he's done that before a show. But starting a tour from nothing and then doing 2 hour back to back shows without any warming up shows surely damages the voice. It's like a soccer player playing the odd ball in the field and then joining the champions league. Jon's always sounded best roughly 20 shows in the tour and then hits a breaking point after roughly 60 shows. From the Crush tour all the way to the 2011 tour it's been like this. Jon had a vocal coach throughout his entire career and he's still abused his voice to no end. It often sounds great but it was rarely doing him any favours.

Salaam Aleikum,
Sebastiaan
