Yeah I've seen them play a medley from the first album due its 40th anniversary this year which included Roulette, She Don't Know Me, Breakout and Come Back I think. That was a lot of fun

Brought a sign saying “Came from Brazil to see you”. Oliver was in shock . Very nice and humble guy.

Man, look at those stats. Rock music is well and truely dead commercially.

"Just 29 of the Top 200 albums on Billboard's year-end 2024 chart were from rock artists. Depressingly, none of them were released this year. All but five of the 29 were greatest hits collections."

It's a very bad time for music, that's for sure.

But it depends how you approach it. There was never bigger number of quality (indie) bands, artists and songs out there, but there is no obvious vertical way to approach them (and when I say "indie" I don't mean indie music genre, but outside of market capture of Universal, Sony and Werner).

It is true that there are no movements, no currents, no homogenous department of music anymore outside of mainstream that is readily accessible to vast majority of listeners. And while music still is important to younger generations, it's not a defining trait anymore to them, as it is relegated to background of shopping mall or tiktok video.

For better or worse, it's all horizontal now outside of the mainstream. Nostalgia in me says it's for worse, but if you just go for quality of music, then it's much better this way. I guess it depends

I kinda disagree. It's true that we have an incredible amount of indipendent musicians these days on platforms like Spotify but many good ones are trapped in a cycle of putting out music that only a bunch of people will listen to. In my opinion that's because the bigger chunk of the audience is not listening to music that makes them question the world or helps them through tough times anymore. Most ears have become lazy and used to all the crap the market/social medias/talent shows/tiktok feed them. A huge part of the audience only wants self-boasting music that's in line with any current tendency and definitely "harmless" content-wise. The market moves incredibly fast, look at that Extreme song with that incredible solo that blew up overnight and went away in a month.
Also, no big label is helping the rawest and most authentic talents any longer. Most of the labels nowadays only want a pinch of talent and a body they can 100% tailor to their needs. That Iyah May's Karmageddon scandal comes to mind, or the Maneskin guy too (the Italian """rock""" band). He's done 180 after 180 image-wise and music-wise his whole career and I remember when they were playing indie/reggae on the street, acting like something that's a bit more than a label push.

You make some very good points. I don't think we are in disagreement. There are some positives in this new "horizontal" hierarchy, but lots of good sides are lost. The attention span of younger generations also doesn't help. It's very hard to consistenly make solid music with 2 minute songs.

Thanks, I guess we're not! That's definitely an issue, most of my friends aren't able to watch a 2h long movie without pulling out their phones. Drives me nuts.
