Default Are Jon and Richie really that clueless ?

On more than one occasion, when letting the crowd pick a song, Jon listed I Love This Town next to some great songs. I remember laughing so hard in NJ 2013 when he said “I got These Days, I got ILTT, I got Blood on Blood…”, and then said “how about ILTT ?” (To which he got a very poor response from the crowd). In Lisbon 2011, he chose to end a fantastic show AND tour again with ILTT and Twist and shout, despite having a ton of great songs rehearsed and ready to go. I’ve never written or released a song myself, so I have no idea if he has the need to embrace his song even though he knows that 99% of the fans don’t like it. Or, does he have a clue that 99% of the fans don’t like it and would rather hear something else ?

In 2012 Richie did a cover of Don’t Look Back in Anger (I’m an Oasis diehard fan, but I have no desire at all to see Richie covering Oasis, and what’s worse, impersonating Liam even though everyone knows that Noel sings the song. But does Richie now that ?

And then he chose to play WSYCGH. Everyone knows that only Bon Jovi diehards bought tickets to see Richie live in 2012, and 99% of them can’t stand the song being played anymore, and would rather hear something from his own albums. But again, does Richie know that ?

These are just a couple of examples, but the list goes on and on.

Are they really that clueless ??

Cheers

Eduardo

The thing about ILTT is it operates on the same parameter as WGIGO. Where We Got It Going On existed as Jon's "platform in to the audience song (which arguably could be done as any song with that tempo, I guess) ILTT is straight up pandering.

They used it for easy applause, the screens would show jerseys of that town's sports team, they would flash the name of the city. I think it's incredibly pandering and easy clapping but my god it worked. People ate it up at the shows I saw and the people with the biggest problem were the ones who were sick of the song being shoved at them tour after tour. So...50 people maybe.

It's not about being clueless, they're serving a part of the audience that likes fireworks and happy endings not people who know they have better songs. Just my take on it.

100% agree with this. I'd add Captain Crash to the same category - not a great song but the audience generally love it.

I hate when JBJ sings WSYCGH but I actually loved Richie's version of it. Didn't have the endless It's Alright(s)!
