Like Richie said I think most times they use the word lord or god or whatever they just use it to emote a certain feeling or add expression, not intended in a religious way.

Obviously everyone sees music in different ways, not being religious I would not see any song, even one so blatantly titled as Hey God, to hold any religious meaning for me.

I missed it but there was a program on TV on Xmas night "Who Wrote The Bible" or something, did anyone manage to see it?

I didnt see it , but I think there is a repeat on tonight.

So if these religious related words are not religious then why dont they use another word ? Catholics are famous for using Oh mary mother of God, and Lord Jesus in their everyday language due to the basis of their religious upbringing.

If you read some of the lyrics I dont think they are used in the context of Oh my God, they are in a context of a prayer a psalm.

so, presumably, when you see jon on stage preaching about jonny's church, that also has religious connotations? i think you're reading into these lyrics far too much.

Like I've tried to express when we have discussed "swearing" I think they are just words. To me god is just a word, not a name, hence you may notice I did not capitalize it. The same with jesus, just a word, along with christ.

Lord is actually a name but in the sense of a servant greeting their master, "Yes M'Lord", so I have to wonder if that is an apropriate word for religious people to use when referring to god and jesus. Do you see yourselves as less than them, born to serve them and so forth?

That's another thing I don't like about religion, the way that people bow down to god as if this almighty power which has never proved its existence is somehow worthy of our time and effort. Although saying that I would not bow to anyone.

When JBJ does his Jonny church speech, does he relate to God or the Lord, I think it is over the top and I dont particulary like this act, but I dont see it as religous based.

I am not reading into every single lyric I am merely pointing out the mass of religious type references that appear in the songs. I have always noticed them because of my belief in God and I wondered if other people had noticed them. I have wondered just lately how an athiest would be able to be a Jovi fan with so many references to religion in the context of the songs, I wondered if athiests just listend to BJ songs that didnt contain religious references otherwise I would think that they would be offended a lot .

i don't, simply because i think the atheists who do listen to the songs will see them as expressive terms rather than deliberate attempts to 'spread the word'.

it'd be interesting to hear your views on the lyrics to dry county:

'"in the blessed name of jesus", i heard a preacher say,
"we are all god's children" and that he'd be back, back some day.
i hope that he knew something as he drank that cup of wine,
i didn't have too good a feeling, as i head out to the night'

to me that suggests he isn't fully believing in what god can do and is simply using these lines to add some depth to the argument that nothing can save the people of 'dry county'.

Mr ANDERSON, you are straying from topic , this is not a general religion topic but one on BJ and religion.

The points. You think that BJ are just using words such as Lord , Jesus and God as just words. Why dont they use other words ? these words must be part of their vocabulary for some reason. I think it is because these words are used often in their lifestyle. Song writers are very picky about thr words they use, they use GOd , Lord in a call out desperation in a lot of their songs. If they didnt believe that God was there to call out to they wouldnt use these words in the first place.

for example a Muslim wouldnt shout out Jesus in desperation!

Like I said though in refernce to the lyrics they are not inherently religious. If you are religious you choose to interperet them as such, but if you are not religious you will hear the song differently.

The Jonnys church bit that he does is not religious to me really. It's about having faith in the music, as he says his religion is rock and roll etc, so to me that is not religious. Perhaps it pokes fun at religion a little, but if you look at it truly there is no difference to praising a song as to praising a mystical being that has no evidence of its existence.

I shall start a new religion....let us praise the squirrels. They created us so we should bow to them and build temples to honour them and spend time and money praising them. They would not care if we did though, so it's a waste of time.

but you don't have to be religious to say 'jesus' either. it is a very general term nowadays.

I agree with you, Jon is telling a religious based story and has dubt in there also. Why he needs to add religion is interesting, it raises questions of ones beliefs in certain circumstances.
