People talk to their pets and they don't believe they understand.

Well as to other faiths, I would presume that when God is mentioned in BJ songs then perhaps they interpret this into meaning their own God.
Just like you do. You interpret that they mean your god.

However if BJ made references to different named Gods in their music then I would choose not to listen.
That speaks volumes of the tolerance of the religious people. Wasn't it the bible that said "do onto others as you would have others do onto you"? You're allowed to preach us about your religion but you wouldn't listen if someone does the same to you?

I would therefore imagine this to be the same for atheists, would an atheist be comfortable listening to references to God all the time?
Well, you're wrong. Atheists have no problem with the words "god", "lord" or "jesus". You have your interpretation of the lyrics they have theirs. You're no more right than anyone else.

Hello Ice baby,

An atheist can see their pets so therefore believe they are there, that is not a very good example.

Regarding my tolerance to other religions , my religions and others state that I am not to worship other Gods, if BJ were singing about other Gods by name then I would have to interpret whether or not this would be seen as worshipping other Gods and therefore not to listen.

Of course atheists dont have problems with the words God, Jesus and Lord, but I would imagine they have problems with the wording of some of the BJ lyrics. Ie Born to be my baby comes to mind and there are plenty more with heavy duty references to God.

Actually it is. You can see your pets, but you don't think they understand you. Still you speak to them, just like you could address god even if you thought he didn't exist.

That is one of the reasons I detest any and all religions. They claim to be tolerant and good-willing, but still everyone else not believeing the same is wrong and will go to hell.

Have you ever thought that maybe Bon Jovi are singing about Allah, but just use the word "god" cause it fits better? Or the God of the Jewish people. He's not the same as yours you know. He never had a son.

Heavy duty? LOL It's just an expression. Like "Oh my God!" or "Goddamn".

You've hit the proverbial nail on the head. That is what I personally believe religion is.
My thoughts as well, except that there are a few who try to make the rest believe it. And unfortunately, a lot even follow.

why do you always choose to read things as you want to see them?

nobody said that at all. they are religious words but, the majority of the time, nowadays they are not used in a religious context, but in general speech.
Thank you!

He Dawn,

Whay about those T-shirts people wear saying "Thank God I'm an atheist"? They always make me laugh

At the end of the day the use of the word "God" and such is just an expression in general speech. Surely not everybody is thinking of the "Allmighty deity" when they say that!

Also, isn't there a commandment saying "Thou shalt not use the name of God in vain" or words to that extent? That would show that people using God in trivial conversations are not believers or they would be sinning!

Yup thats one of the commandments not to use his name in vain (blasphemy).

Personally i dont mind bj using religious themes in there songs (what a shock lol). I can relate better to those songs so i prefer them.

Like on The Life Of Brian when the man is to be stoned for saying Jehovah, lol.

Great film that, shows how easily people can mis-hear someone and think they are "the son of god" etc, just what I believe religious stories to be. Like an age long game of chinese whispers.

In the song Save A Prayer Jon sings something like "Dear jesus, buddah, allah or can I just call you Joe" which obviously intends to preach to all people of all faiths, in essence believing that there is one god that just goes by different names.

Personally, I dont give a shite about religion of any kind, from my point of view it's "imaginary friend for weak minded". *If* BJ chooses to start preaching any other gospel than rock'n'roll I won't be listening.

Using few religious words in lyrics doesn't make them true believers, its just few words damnit. These religious people just have a habit of making things appear as they best suit them.....saying "God" sure indicates that person saying it is a believer.......and talk about Devil makes people the opposite. Doh!...No wonder people (Americans?) still label certain bands/music as devilish......recent discussion about Pantera for example.

Bottom line is, no matter what u believe in, u shouldn't mix it with everything in everyday life. Some things just aren't religious, even if u want 'em to be.

I'm not too happy with Bon Jovi using religious references in their songs. As a Jew, it makes me feel a little uncomfortable when Jon sings things like, "I want to be just as close as the holy ghost is". Over time, I've become a little more comfortable with BJ songs with religious content (except Hey G-d). I think part of that has to do with the fact that I found out that Dave is Jewish.

You know, Dawn, it's funny that you should mention Keep the Faith as your example. Once I actually heard the song, it didn't bother me. It's one of the few songs with religious content that I didn't have a problem with. I think they just used "lord" just as a filler- like "woah". If you noticed, in OWN they didn't use the word "lord" in the song at all (at least I don't think so).

Now that I think about it, I was reluctant to get into Bon Jovi because I was worried that they were a Christian band. I mean, I picked up a copy of Cross Road at the library and looked over the track listing and thought, "Livin' on a Prayer? Keep the Faith? Should I be listening to these guys?" I'm not a fan of religious rock- even of my own religion.

I'm just joining in - I think that Bon Jovi definately has a religious theme throughout his music. Would I classify them as a Christian band? Definitely not in the traditional way. I think that Bon Jovi tends to highlight religion in the context of struggles. For me, there are Bon Jovi songs that are spiritually moving and make connections to God. A listener cannot help it if a song touches them and religious interpretations bring additional meaning. That is why art is so cool and those who appreciate different forms of art use it as a way to enrich their understanding of themselves, their beliefs, the world around them.... I don't think that makes a person self-serving but instead insightful reflectors.
