Why do people think that Bon Jovi should be the band they were in 1986? Times have changed and so have they.

1984 - when they'd sold very few of those and had to depend on bigger acts such as the scorpions to show them to their markets

i agree

but not when they first started - in fact i'd say it began with SWW because until then they didn't seem to be able to capture the commercial markets efficiently

commercial should be distinguished between BJ and say Vanilla Ice/Britney

ie - in it JUST for money or not

They continue to write songs that they are proud of. Jon and Richie have said so often how proud they are of Bounce. They're giving it to us from their hearts
no offense

but do you really expect them to say in interviews:

"Here's our new album Bounce - it's good but not that good and we prefer our older albums"

No!!!

instead

"this is our most mature record yet... and shows our diversity as songwriters much more than any previous record"

No - they'd either not put the album out or they wouldn't do so much press to promote it. Lighten up, Francis.
The band has always been commercial in the sense that they've always made music the general public likes - they weren't catering to a fringe element of music fans (which is probably the very reason critics have never been fond of them.)
Some people just like to toss around certain phrases (commercial, pop, sellout) with little though put into the words they choose... it's not about the band... it's about that person's need to identify with something and when what they chose to identify themselves with alters slightly, it throws their personal world off kilter.
Bon Jovi is Bon Jovi... they've never swayed

I don't think they'd release anything they weren't proud of. They're not on anyone's time table but their own. They're not the type of artists who will attach their name to a creation they're not proud of. They do create it themselves which is more than many commercial acts. I think that is where one of the differences lies.

One thing that can be scratched from this is "Bon Jovi making albums for the money" ... That's the most ridiculous statement I've ever read.......

Why?

Because the guys don't make the REAL money with albums. They make it with touring. So, they don't sit around and make new albums for MONEY.. If they wanted money, they could spend little time putting out live albums and tour for them and the general Bon Jovi fans along with whoever they bring will show up.. Boom-they get money. But that's not the case.

i'm not doubting they're proud of it

i can't wait to see them live (though i may have to pass my tickets on unfortunately) but i'm just hoping they will at some point in next few years do at least 1 more album where selling records is no mass priority
