Not to mention, there are more risks involved with women of advanced maternal age (35 & older) including Down Syndrome. So to Jon & Dorothea, congratulations (I think).

Why wouldn't a 41 year old woman want to have a child????? 41 years is NOT old (just look at her). There may be a slightly higher risk for certain diseases, but a lot has to do with the physical condition of the parents. I don't see a problem there. Both are fitter than many 20 year olds.
So what if they are in their 60s when the kid graduates high-school??? What does age have to do with this. Isn't the parents involvement and concern for the kids more important than age (which is merely a number)? I am sure both will still be mentally and physically fit when they are 60, so what's the problem?
Being a little older to have kids can be much better than being in their 20s. You have a different outlook at life and usually your priorities have straightened out by the time you get to your mid 30s.
Besides, there are many women who choose to have their kids later in life, without any downsides.
Finally, she is not starting to have babies, she is continuing........
