Best Album... By Math!

Ok, here are my five stars (BTW, I assign five star based on combined factors that vary from musicianship, to personal taste. I also tend to vote by album, so a five star song on one album might not be five star on another album, if you follow me.)

That's the problem with this system. A five start rating on Lost Highway would not be equal to a five star rating on some of the older albums IMO. So then, if you do a weighted average you are automatically ranking the albums before you choose your favorites - which skews the results.

When it comes to this sort of thing I prefer my longtime preference rather than a mathematical system.

Not really, in my book. I give Lay Your Hands On Me a five star rating and give Keep The Faith a five star rating. To me it means I find both songs worth 5 stars. A 5 star song means the song is perfect, has the "it" factor of it being a fantastic song and it's just perfect.

Yes, some 5 star songs are better than other 5 star songs, but still, I'll never give a song like Summertime 5 stars, since it'd mean I find it just as good as KTF. None of them have that it factor. Whoever is giving a song like Summertime a five star rating while Dry County gets the same rating is making me question of his ability to rate a song. Yes, Summertime can be a fantastic song to me, it does come down to taste, but when looking at the rest of his list, it makes me wonder how critical he really is.

It's the thing that surprises me the most when reading the album reviews on drycounty.com. Many albums get a 10 out of 10, while it's simply impossible to consider every single song just as good as the next one.

This is what I thought too but remeber, you rate these songs individualy on every album and how they compare to other songs on THAT album. If I rated all BJ songs together then some of these 5 star songs would be rated lower... Example, I rated "It's my Life" 5 stars because it's better than most songs on Crush but overall, I don't think it compares to KTF, Prayer, any song on TD, I don't even have IML on my BJ GrHits mix CD.
And one other song, "Only Lonely" is my only 5star on 7800, that doesn't mean I think it's as good as "Prayer".

This is just mathematical stuff, and everybody seem to be finding the results they've had all along. Compared to my old list, only two albums towards the bottom switched places, my top four were still the Holy Four. There is nothing in the world more accurate than Math, except one individual's feelings and emotions.

And... I'm so bored these days, I'm doing this with all my CDs! So far, Sing the Sorrow by AFI is the only album rated higher than These Days.

You can't judge by math; music is about feelings and emotions - what you like most is what you like the most; for almost indefinable reasons.

Examples are everywhere: I have an Alfa Romeo even though it drink fuel like there's no tomorrow, isn't amazingly quick compared to rivals from BMW, Merc or Audi and is too heavy - the thing is, it makes me feel good; special.

It's similar with loads of stuff from preffering a Bang & Olufsen stereo to a Philips, or a coffee machine with a little chrome strip on it even though it makes crap coffee.
