The people who say Freddie Mercury was the greatest frontman ever are the same people that say Nirvana is the greatest rock group ever. If they were both still alive, opinions would be different.
It's hard to argue against AC/DC in a best rock group poll. If we're talking best group ever, I can't go against The Beatles.

I would also beg to differ on this as I think Freddie was the greatest frontman ever and think Nirvana along with Led Zeppelin are two of the most overrated bands of all time. Even when Freddie Mercury was so weak from AIDS that he could barely stand his voice still had more power than pretty much any rock singer alive or dead.
AC/DC are a fun rock band but are really just a Status Quo style boogie rock band. Don't get me wrong I enjoy their stuff and sing along to Highway To Hell and Back In Black like everyone else. They are basically a one-trick pony though and therefore not the greatest rock band of all time.
I couldn't tell you who the greatest is but Queen, Sabbath, Deep Purple and Rush would all be in there. Of the modern bands I'd say Dream Theater and Tool are both incredible bands who may come into this category.
