I don't see it that way. I'd like to know how BOR and TAALS follow the formula of IBTFY. Apart from being rock ballads (which implies a certain formula like verse/chorus/solo etc.), they are quite original songs with an original, genuine feeling and 'structure' to them (as I said, within the given borders, it's not like they are re-inventing the genre).

The first BJ ballad I would call formulatic is "Thank You For Loving Me", even moreso "All About Loving You" - both musically and lyrically sounding crafted to be hit songs and sound like they use elements of former songs (like the bridge after the solo in TYFLM borrows from "Always").

It's totally ok to be formulaic.
I prefer 'formulaic' bands as long as their formula is good over bands that try too hard to experiment and suck ass as a result.

I agree with this to an extent. But then you have ACDC who have made the same albums for 30yrs, makes it pretty boring for the fans after a while. If all bands stayed the same there would be no Joshua Tree, Automatic for the people, Ok Computer, Hysteria, Keep the Faith etc etc, but the thing is these albums still manage to sound like the original band..but have progressed the formula in some way in each case.

JBJ - I believe

"Sambora's face is a mask of joyous disbelief, as if previously unaware of his ability to play the instrument at all. Reaching the last fistful of notes, he does a fair impression of a man who is actually ejaculating into his jet black flares."
