If that's what raising the volume does for you, your stereo is the issue, not the CD. With the first 2 band records the hiss would become more audible when turning up the volume, but as for the subsequent records that followed the mixing was done rather well and by the Blaze was released everything was mixed for a CD release.

As for making the sound shitty, again, your stereo system is the issue. If the overal sound changes when the volume is turned up, your speakers and amplifier isn't able to carry sounds on high volume. The only thing turning up the volume on the CD would do for you is you not needing to turn up the volume, thus your amp not needing to do so much work.
