I got hit with craving for Cinderella this evening out of the blue. I haven't bothered listening to them in some time. On the way home from work I found myself turning "Somebody Save Me" into an apt anthem. That lead to watching the video for the first time in years.

The live footage took me back to seeing them with Bon Jovi. Today... usually, we don't care who is opening for Bon Jovi. Large swaths of empty seats and people just walking around the arena during the opening band is standard.

When Cinderella opened for Bon Jovi, it was almost a double-billing tour. Cinderella was in heavy rotation on MTV and other major music video outlets (any other Americans remember NBC's Friday Night Videos?) with both Nobody's Fool and Somebody Save Me in heavy rotation. "Night Songs" was getting a good push in print-media ads before and during release. People were going to the shows to see both bands knowing that Jon helped discover Cinderella. The momentum gained helped propel them into their own headlining tour for on their sophomore tour! Bon Jovi was on their 3rd go round before that happened...which initially it didn't. On the flip side, Cinderella's 3rd tour was their last with a full arena stage set.

Angelfire.com: Cinderella was playing a gig in their hometown, Philly, and Jon happened to be in the club that night. He liked what he heard and got his label's talent scout to come see them and they ended up getting signed to a label as a result.

...Bon Jovi has been quoted as saying "I saw Tommy Keifer onstage delivering some pretty nifty, growling vocals. Then he whipped out this Les Paul and proceeded to lay into some astounding sounds. This guy struck me as a star right then and there...."

Interview with Cinderella guitarist Jeff LaBar:

"...Bon Jovi was in Philadelphia recording the 7800° Fahrenheit record. On a night off from recording, Jon went out to watch Cinderella perform...I was in a band that opened for them...Derek Shulman, the man who signed Bon Jovi to Polygram, had the band's demo sitting on his desk...

"Derek came out, saw Cinderella play live and pretty much said...great look, great songs, great energy. They just need to change the drummer and the guitar player...Two of the other guitarists who auditioned were "Snake" Sabo (Skid Row) and Reggie Wu (Heaven's Edge)..."
Say what? Jon "just happened" to end up watching a band whose demo "just happened" to be in possession of the same record exec who "just happened" to have signed HIM? And one of the auditioners "just happened" to be a childhood friend of Jon's? Such coincidences -- will wonders never cease!

Hehe. I actually was going to mention that in my post last night at how it's occurred to me that the whole "Jon discovered Cinderella" thing is more likely a marketing tool (a clever one that worked.) I just opted to stick with how it was back then though rather than get into exposing the man behind the curtain.

I only knew the first two albums, listening Heartbreak Station album now. Pretty good stuff.

Tommy Keifer once told it was indeed Jon who saw him in a bar. But he was getting sick and tired of the same old story like without Jon nothing would have happened.

Heartbreak Station is my favorite Cinderella album, the fourth album Still Climbing is good as well. Jon, Bach, and Keifer were my 3 favorite vocalists back in the day.

I will give Still Climbing a spin too.

Keifer had such a very special voice, I remember seeing them on tv doing the Moscow Peace Festival 1989. I was immediately hooked.

Skid Row, yeah sure but I only had Slave To The Grind.

Another band I really liked back then was Kingdom Come. The press tried to slag them off as a Led Zeppelin ripoff but they had such great songs and an amazing singer too. The first two albums are really worth checking out in case you havent heard them.
