Maybe not, but it was quite clear who the loser was.

Richie gave an interview to Eddie Trunk this weekend and said he was offered the Kiss job just before Jovi broke big.

I don't think he was offered the gig. I know he auditioned for it, but no one in KISS has ever said it was offered to him.

I never quite got Kiss - their ok - but they reek of cheesy USA. Sambora choose wisely.

He recently went into it a bit while giving an interview and he says he didn't get it because Gene and the rest of the band expected him to worship them and know all their songs, while he couldn't play a single Kiss tune and just wanted to jam with them during the audition. So yeah, he sort of admitted he didn't get the gig.

It's pretty clear he didn't get it, but the thing is, was he offered it. I don't think he ever was, he just auditioned. It's not like they called him and said "if you want, you can join us".

Richie discussed the whole Kiss thing on Howard Stern.

At that point, Kiss was still somewhat a respectable act. Their make-up was still on and they weren't a complete mock just yet. However, their popularity was definitely starting to decrease. After they somehow made it through the disco era with "I Was Made For Loving You", they started to lose band members and their music was starting to suffer.

I think the Creatures of the Night released in '82 would have been Richie's first album.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Creatures_of_the_Night

"It is also the band's last album recorded with Ace Frehley credited as an official member (until 1998's Psycho Circus), and its first album with Vinnie Vincent as the initially uncredited lead guitarist (Vincent would later be credited, but not featured pictorially on the cover, of 1985's reissue of the album).

By the time of Creatures of the Night, Ace Frehley had already departed the band but their contract obligated Kiss to feature him on the album's cover regardless. Also, Vinnie Vincent, who has not been featured pictorially on any version of the album cover other than bootleg copies that have intentionally airbrushed his face over Frehley's (see below), has variously alleged that during the recording sessions other members of the band specifically instructed him to attempt to play as much in Ace Frehley's style as possible, even stopping Vincent at various points to say "Ace wouldn't have played that note"[citation needed]. Other people present during the recording sessions have not necessarily corroborated that story; in any case, what is definitely known is that Frehley had no musical involvement with the recording of the album. This is also the last album in the band's original make-up era before unmasking in 1983."

Lick It Up in '83 was next and that would have been the first view of Richie on an album cover. So technically he would have not been part of the make-up era.

The only other possibility was the "Animalize" album in '84 but he was already starting with Bon Jovi at that point so I think it would have been highly unlikely. It was released late (Sept) 1984 and Bon Jovi's album was released in early (Jan) '84.

"The album marked the only appearance by lead guitarist Mark St. John, who replaced Vinnie Vincent in April 1984"
