It's never clear weather the people are male or female. It's also not clear that they are lovers. As Richie said, for him the song is about him and his family. (was it his daughter?) I always thought the lyrics were clever in that they never give away what this is about, you can interpret it in many ways. That's what's missing in Adrians analysis.
